German TV Car-Jump Stunt Goes Hideously Wrong (video)

Samuel Koch attempted to jump car in stilts as mother, studio audience, millions of viewers watched on live TV

A man was severely injured in a car-jumping stunt for a live German TV game show as a studio audience that included his mother and millions of home viewers watched.

Contestant Samuel Koch was trying to use special stilts to leap moving cars for the popular German show "Wetten Dass" (translated as "bet it," or wanna bet"). He landed face-first after jumping a car driven by his father, as the audience applause turned to stunned silence.

Justin Bieber canceled a performance that had been scheduled to take place on the show after the jump Saturday. He tweeted: "Please pray for Samuel Koch & his family as we wait and hope for his health and safety."

Broadcaster ZDF said the 23-year-old's accident caused it to cancel the live broadcast. The show has an average audience of 10 million.

The German news agency BPAD quoted Duesseldorf hospital Dr. Wolfgang Raab as saying Koch suffered multiple back injuries and fractures, according to The Associated Press. Koch underwent surgery Sunday, and his condition was initially life threatening, Raab said.

Video of the accident is below. Warning: Graphic.
