The musical will presumably sample liberally from hits, such as "Conga" and "The Rhythm is Going to Get You," while recounting the collaboration between Estefan and her husband, musician and producer Emilio Estefan.

The jukebox musical has become increasingly popular in recent years for producers hoping to attract audiences with familiar music from popular singers' song catalogs.

However, the genre has its risks. For every "Jersey Boys," the Tony-winning tale of the Four Seasons nearing its eighth year on Broadway, there are bombs like "Viva Forever," the Spice Girls' musical that was critically excoriated when it debuted in London's West End last year.

Gloria Estefan became a Latin American icon, scoring seven Grammy Awards and selling over 100 million albums worldwide.  Though less well-known, Emilio Estefan also left an indelible impression on pop music, guiding not only the career of his wife, but also those of Shakira, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez.

The producers are hoping that Gloria and Emilio are as enchanting company as Frankie Valli and his crooning crew.

“The Estefans’ journey of success, led by raw talent and passion, is captivating as it drove them from relative obscurity to global sensations," said Jimmy Nederlander, president of the Nederlander Organization.
