‘Good Morning America’ on Brink of First Sweeps Win in 18 Years

If trend continues, ABC's "Good Morning America" will take its first sweeps-period victory in key news demo since 1994

Watch out, "Today"; "Good Morning America" is this close to scoring a big ratings victory.

With three days left to tally for this year's November sweeps, "Good Morning America" is poised to take the top slot in a sweeps period for the first time in nearly two decades, ABC News said Monday.

With November coming to a close, ABC's morning-show offering is averaging 2.03 million viewers in the key news demo of adults 25-54, and 5.3 million total viewers — which puts it ahead of NBC's "Today," which has averaged 1.99 million viewers in the demo and 4.9 million; and CBS's "CBS This Morning," which is averaging 1.06 million viewers in the demo and 2.9 million total viewers.

Should the trend hold, this November's sweeps will mark the first time that "GMA" has won any sweep period in the key demo since July 1994, and the first time that it's claimed a total viewership victory during November sweeps since 1995.

Once a reliable second place to NBC's dominant "Today," "Good Morning America" has been making inroads against its rival this year — in the last week of August, "GMA" posted an 18-year high versus "Today," besting it in the key demo by 152,000 viewers and in total viewers by 883,000.

Season to date, "Good Morning America" has led in both the key news demo and in total viewers, leading "Today" by 142,000 viewers in the demo and by 542,000 total viewers.
