Google+ Flexes Its Social Media Muscle With iPhone App

With 10 million users and counting, Google+ is taking aim at its bigger rivals

With approval from the Apple store, Google launched its Google+ app for the iPhone.

Google's social media platform has racked up 10 million users since its June 28 trial launch. With an Android application available since its inception, iPhone and iPad owners were only able to access the online version, which lacks some of the site's mobile capabilities.

Google+ is centered around users categorizing their friends into various, customizable “circles,” addressing some of the anxieties that come with sharing information online to an entire friends list. Posts can be directed to one or multiple specific, private groups.

The mobile app also includes the “huddle” feature, which hosts groups chats with contacts in your circles, among other features.

MySpace founder Tom Anderson, who knows what it’s like to have another social media outlet come in and squash you like a bug, is in favor of the service. LinkedIn’s CEO Jeff Weiner, on the other hand, is skeptical that Google+ will be able to gain footing.

"Nobody has any free time," he told Business Insider. "Unlike social platforms and TV, which can coexist, you don't see people using Twitter while they're using Facebook, or using Facebook while they're using LinkedIn."
