Gotham Awards Add New Acting Categories, Set Dec. 2 Date

Independent film awards presented by IFP opens categories to established actors rather than just "breakthrough" performances

The Gotham Independent Film Awards, one of the two independent-film honors that bookend awards season, has added new Best Actor and Best Actress categories and set Dec. 2 as the date of its 23rd annual ceremony.

Gotham AwardsNew York-based, the Gothams are typically one of the first significant awards shows of the season, with the Los Angeles-based Film Independent Spirit Awards being one of the last. Past winners have included “Beginners,” “The Tree of Life,” “Winter’s Bone” and, last year, “Moonrise Kingdom.”

Awards are chosen by a jury selected by the Independent Filmmaker Project. This year, winners will include the new Best Actor and Best Actress categories, as well as Best Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Breakthrough Actor and the newly renamed Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. The Gotham Audience Award is chosen by movie fans.

In the past, the Breakthrough Actor award was the only one to recognize acting and included both male and female performers. The new awards will open the field to more performances — and, presumably, tempt more stars to attend the show, which this year will take place at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Submissions are now being accepted in six of the categories, with applications available at http://gotham.ifp.org. The deadline is Sept. 20.
