‘Hunger Games’ and ‘Bad Grandpa’ Make Oscar Makeup Shortlist

Surprising list leaves off “The Hobbit,” “Rush” and “The Butler”

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” and “Dallas Buyers Club” are among the seven films that remain in the running for the Oscar for makeup and hairstyling, the Academy announced on Saturday.

But the surprising news in the announcement was that several of the films considered frontrunners in the race, including “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Rush,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Oz the Great and Powerful” were left off the shortlist.

Instead, the list also included “American Hustle,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters” and “The Lone Ranger.”

The seven-film shortlist was compiled after a vote by members of the Makeup Artists & Hairstylists Branch, which also recommended specific individuals primarily responsible for the shortlisted work.

The 135 members of the branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from the shortlisted films at a “bakeoff” at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Jan. 11. Members who have seen all seven of the shortlisted films will then be invited to vote, and three nominees will be selected.
