‘House of Style’ Returns to MTV on Blog, Tumblr, Instagram

New episodes of the rebooted 1990s series begin in October

“House of Style,” a fashion-centric show that ran on MTV throughout the 1990s, will return to the network as a multi-platform series combining archival footage and new content.

MTV will tease the new “House of Style” with a documentary about the original show, airing Aug. 7, before offering new programming starting on October 9 (A trailer for the doc can be found at the bottom). The new “House of Style” will live on MTV’s Style blog, where the network will upload video shorts each week.

Still, MTV is stressing the multi-platform nature of the new fashion series as it could incorporate everything from a post on Tumblr to a video to something on Instagram.

“The idea is that new episodes will be TV, mobile, web, Instagram … everywhere that you can put informational media, ‘House of Style’ will appear,” Dave Sirulnick, EVP of MTV News and Docs told TheWrap.

New episodes will be short-form pieces, but MTV will also place 58 of the original 72 episodes online starting Tuesday. Each will be accompanied by text both recapping the show and explaining its current significance.

“There’s nostalgia for the series, so we went deep into the archives,” Sophia Rai, VP of Production for MTV Digital, told TheWrap. “We spent the last six months to a year scouring not just all the episodes that aired but unaired footage, and there was some amazing stuff we have that never made it onto the show.”

Sirulnick said the audience for the show is the core MTV audience in the 12-24 age range, an audience that is “fashionable and stylish, where style, fashion and design inform their lives everyday.”

The new videos will air on network television as well, but MTV has not figured out where or when just yet.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford was the original show’s first host, followed by the likes of Rebecca Romijn and Molly Sims.

The show went behind the scenes of the fashion world as supermodels became famous across the globe. Episodes were often devoted to major events like the Video Music Awards and the MTV Movie Awards.

In keeping with that idea, MTV will announce the host for the rebooted show Sept. 6 at the VMAs.
