Slate has solved one of the great mysteries of AMC's "The Killing": How Joel Kinnaman, who plays stoned-seeming, flat-voiced Det. Holder, really talks.
The Swedish-American Kinnaman walks off with scene after scene as a former narcotics detective who may or may not smoke pot as he resorts to bullying, homophobic taunts and chatting up teenage girls to help Det. Linden (Mireille Enos) solve the murder of Rosie Larsen. Kinnaman plays him as a gangly adolescent of a cop with a zonked-out accent that's impossible to place.

The performance is all the more impressive when you see how little the character resembles Kinnaman, who has signed on to join Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in "Safe House."
