Hulu, Morgan Spurlock Unite for Documentary Series

This marks the first long-form original production in Hulu’s history

Hulu's first long-form original production will debut this summer with the help of documentarian Morgan Spurlock and subjects like Richard Branson and Williams James Adams Jr. (better known as willi.i.am.).

Spurlock, the director of "Super Size Me" and creator of "30 Days," has created an original documentary series titled "A Day in the Life," which will air six half-hour episodes on Hulu and Hulu Plus starting August 17.

In the show, Spurlock follows around famous individuals for a day, including Branson, Adams Jr. and comedian Russell Peters.

“As a filmmaker, I am always looking for new and exciting ways to reach an audience and to tell stories," Spurlock said in a statement. "When the opportunity to create an original doc series with Hulu presented itself, I jumped at the chance. Hulu has become such an important outlet for content creators and a real destination for fans."

Hulu has had original productions before, but none of this scale.

The service first became popular thanks to its selection of current TV shows that it attained through deals with NBC, ABC and Fox. It is owned by the parent companies of those networks — Comcast, Disney and News Corp — who have agree to put Hulu up for sale.

After starting as a free service with ads, Hulu has since introduced Hulu Plus, but that has not quieted the ire of companies like News Corp., which recently announced it would delay the releases of its shows for digital viewing.

As media and entertainment companies distance themselves from Hulu, Hulu has chosen to invest in new shows.

“We are being extremely deliberate and precise in targeting original content that would not find a natural home on traditional distribution outlets," said Andy Forssell, Senior Vice President of Content Acquisition and Distribution.
