Memo to Nikki: Stop Saying TheWrap Isn't Breaking Stories

Memo to Nikki: Stop Saying TheWrap Isn't Breaking Stories

As I was sitting here putting together our weekly list of the top stories we've written at TheWrap, someone pinged me with Nikki Finke's latest quote about us.(Apparently she's the only person worthy of interviewing about who we are, what we are and how we're doing. Not sure why this is so.)

For about the third time in a row, Nikki's comment is that we do not break news.

So before this kind of repetition hardens into supposed fact, let me set the record straight. TheWrap is breaking news every day, and seeks to offer an authoritative,  intelligent take on the issues facing the entertainment industry, every day.

We won't succeed every day. But we break a helluva lot of news, including right in Nikki's sweet spot -- the guilds and the potential SAG strike.

We beat la Finke in week two with the news that SAG President Alan Rosenberg was suing his own union over the board's ouster of negotiator Doug Allen. (Ouch.)

We beat la Finke again when we got an exclusive interview with Rosenberg the previous week, saying he would not resign. And then praising his union in song.

What else? We broke news of Lionsgate and Summit new talks to merge. (Nikki appears to have stolen this in the middle of her Superbowl coverage - you can find the post (I can't seem to), unless she's removed it -- only to discredit it the following day.)

But of course, we bow to la Finke's news-breaking ability. And we link to her when she leads the pack - as with Peter Chernin's departure on Monday.

Further,  we thank her for linking to us, as she did with Andrew Gumbel's revelation of $14 million in consulting fees for The Camden Group at the Motion Picture home. (Even though she seems to find it hard to mention the name of this publication.)

Our breaking news includes investigative journalism. To wit, Gumbel's series on the Motion Picture Fund closures, and Lauren Horwitch's story on David White's ties to lawyer Marc Dreier. We get it right. We play it straight. If we get it wrong, we will say so.

So there you have it. We are other things too, a place for discussion and community of the deeper issues facing the entertainment and media industries. A place for analysis. And for disagreement and debate, as any glance at our open and uncensored comments section will reflect.

We are one month old yesterday, and are delighted to report growing community and traffic -- our biggest day on Monday surpassed by our biggest day today.

We intend to get better. And to break more news. And we wish Nikki Finke, as she does us, only the best.

Sharon,

The Wrap is great!!!

I’d take your wrap over Finke’s. I can’t relate to Finke and I understand she’s not professional.

Last year, a friend of mine emailed her a press release. Her response was at 1am and read: “This is disgusting and you are revolting for publicizing it.”

The same press release received coverage in the LA Times, Fox News, CNN, ++. It was about an artist who turned publicly released mugshots into art. It was far from disgusting.

She could have been more polite about rejecting the pitch. But maybe she was drunk – it was 1am when she responded.

And why does each entry on her blog say “By Nikki Finke”. Isn’t she the only contributor? I bet you she would never dare to publish other “entries” --- out of fear that attention would diverted AWAY from her.

Good luck with the site!

And I doubt you’ll be rude to the people.

A story on KCRW brought the existence of TheWrap to my attention...and I'm so glad it did!
I too look forward to the growth of the site, more breaking news, and continued great coverage of stories about the business of entertainment.
Reading that interview with NF only made me more supportive the TheWrap...please continue the good work!

Nice letter! I barely read Nikki before, but I'll make sure to read the wrap now because I liked that missive.

It's always more fun to read a blog with more than one voice anyway. Nikki must be getting scared.

Thank you Sharon,

All of you there at TheWrap are doing a great job! The fact that your site is so young, makes it that more impressive on what you have accomplished and what we can look forward to as you grow. You give all of us in the entertainment industry great hope for REAL comprehensive news coverage, not some tabloid, sensationalized, hyper-critical PERSONAL opinions.

I think Nikki has gotten past the "Keeping It Real" part.
Maybe she'll rethink her priorities and redirect what really is of TRUE concern.

Gratefully yours,
Rosemary L.

Sharon, I think your site is terrific. Concise and well written. Up to the minute stories that aren't biased. I hope your site never gets clouded by the 'dark side' and keep the folks who run this town, and our unions, on alert. Your links to other sites makes it a one-stop-go-to site. I am particularly appreciative of your, and Andrew Gumble's, investigative reporting of the MPTF long term care facility's proposed closure. You have helped, along with www.savingthelivesofourown.org to shine a light on this appalling disregard of the lives of our own. Keep up the great work!! Keep fighting the good fight. And, keep on keeping an eye on the scoundrels out there.

DHD breaks news from anonymous tipsters whereas TheWrap features insider takes in the form of bylined interviews and HollyBlogs. The two sites have fundamentally different structures and missions and I don't see DHD getting into HollyBlogs and in-depth analysis anymore than I see TheWrap becoming better-sourced than DHD. Perhaps it will come to pass that Nikki and Sharon will avoid pointless conflict - which seems unlikely - and realize that the two sites are not in fact competitors.

Dear Anonymous of 2/27 at 9:57 pm (aka Nikki), according to Quantcast, over 92,000 people worldwide read this site. FYI

THANK GOD someone is willing to out this highly-overrated (from tooting her own horn?), so-called journalist Finke. She literally lifts the stories she claims as her own scoop from other websites and reporters. Think I'm full of hot air? On any given day, pull up her blog then quickly go to variety.com, for example. You'll see the same story!

Whenever another site gets attention, Finke starts to complain. She did it when Kate Coe was at Fishbowl LA, she did it when Defamer took off, and now you're in her sights. Don't worry about it--it's a sign that you're doing well.

She always uses the "not breaking news' thing as a stick to beat another writer with, as if style, tone and wit are nothing compared to being first. If she was a better writer, she wouldn't worry so much about being first.

Loving me some Sharon Waxman and THE WRAP!

My lil Puddums.. don't fret about Finke! The fact she has to hurl her little pings in THE WRAPS direction is Fear! Competition is a good thing...and her insecurity raised its ugly little head when her reign is threatened by a much more classier Site!

Trust me.. a certain pudgy blogger has been doing the same things to me...

What a terrific site! And what a lucky industry to have both la waxman and la finke! viva las divas!

Catfight!
I love this!

Nikki Finke is like that bitchy drunk at a party -- great fun in small doses, but you're so grateful when he passes out. I greatly appreciate what you are working to build here at The Wrap, and look forward to its continued growth.

Knock, knock knock. Anybody home? Does anyone read this site?

Sharon, Don't waste your energies on a low-life like Nikki Finke. Her blog is fun to read, and has lots of news. But she is notoriously wrong on so many things -- she'll declare TOLDJA when any of her stories prove true; silent when just as often her "scoops" prove to be wrong -- and her unfailing negativity about everyone, every company, every development, renders her judgment severely unreliable. You keep doing the good work you're already doing.
