MTV No Longer About 'Music'

MTV changed its logo for the first time in roughly 30 years on Monday.
It was a minor change with major symbolism. The network -- known more for its scripted reality show programming these days than the music videos and industry it revolutionized -- dropped the “Music Television” tagline from the Frank Olinsky-designed original.
With the new look, MTV had those “Jersey Shore”-watching millennials in mind. Via the press release:

“It represents a new visually defined MTV, stimulating its past, present and future and embracing its diversity. Everything from Jersey Shore, to the VMAs to collaborations with the MoMA. The logo is part of MTV’s re-invention to connect with today’s millennial generation and bring them in as part of the channel.”
And with that, “Music Television” can officially rest in peace.

Isn't this conclusion about 15 years too late? MTV has been a joke for SO long. It is, hands down, the worst Network on television.

I never liked all of MTV, but there were some moments. Flock of Seagulls haircut, Huey Lewis, The Human League, Garth Hudson on When the Walls Came Down. Some cool stuff and the right idea at the right time. Now who knows
Cryttal Says
It's really too bad when MUSIC TELEVISION is a lie. They shouldn't have dropped that, they should've just dropped all the bullshit like reality shows not REMOTELY relating to music.

Don't tar Vh1 with the "No music" claim... they're doing okay. Hours of videos through the breakfast hours, continuing "Top 20 Countdown" every week, new episodes of the amazing "Storytellers" every couple of months, and big music-centric events like "Divas" and "Hip Hop Honors". And they launched a new Friday night concert series a couple weeks back that's kind of awesome.
Not easy to do in a world where music delivers undeniably lower ratings than reality shows... Vh1 has loud reality shows but is keeping the music faith I think.

Wow, this is lame. The might as well change the name too!
Steve The Man Says
although the fact MTV is "no longer about the music" is about as topical and relevant as Henny Youngman's prostate, its still worth lamenting the pap that perhaps the most wastful specialty channel on TV (which says something in itself) is nullifying the young minds of today. A generation of Snookie-wannabes = a world full of trite morons.
Mark Shami Says
Such a shame, bring back the music! Rotting young minds with the Jersey Shore isn't helping anyone.

So what? It's not musical for ages. And I don't watch it any more. I used to when it was musical because I like music, not stupid serials and gossips.
Extremely stupid TV channel.

This isn't too newsworthy...everyone already knows that this "new visually defined MTV" hasn't focused on music in years. Changing the logo is them just being late to update their marketing to what already has happened. VH1 is just as bad, or worse, than MTV with their shamless, crappy reality shows. Fuse is pissing me off lately too, showing the same shows over and over again and playing the same 5 movies every other week. At least they still focus most of their airtime on music artists though, so here's to hoping that continues.
Jackie Stamm Says
I just hope they keep the music channels like MTV U still coming with upcoming music. if they don't then that's a huge shame

I remember the old MTV! I loved it. Now its just a bunch of bs! Nothing cool about MTV anymore. It's all about FUSE!
Jen Says
Actually Chris T., "its" is correct. "Its" is a possessive word, (like yours or mine), and it doesn't need an apostrophe. You only use "it's" when you are doing a contraction for it is.
Doug Ramsey Says
Smelled Like Teen Spirit. man, that changed everything. It was time for change, the whole haircut metal stuff was really getting annoying. I was always fan of the more Metal stuff like old Metallica and the like, anyway.
It seems like MTV hardly has anything on at all, really. It's a couple reality shows and a couple other stupid shows mixed in with other stuff. I think all of television is headeed that way, less of everything.
Chris T. Says
"It's" is misspelled. Don't know if that was in the original MTV press release or the transcription. Sorry, but I can't believe media people get that wrong.
bill s. Says
What? They used to play music? :)
