NBC Post-Leno: Seinfeld on Thursdays, 'Parenthood' on Tuesdays (updated)

NBC has pulled the trigger on its post-Leno primetime lineup -- and Jerry Seinfeld is coming back to Thursday nights.

As expected, the network will fill the gap left by the cancellation of the primetime version of "The Jay Leno Show" with a mix of scripted and reality series.

The Seinfeld-produced comedy reality series "The Marriage Ref" will air Thursdays at 10 starting March 4 after a sneak preview on Feb. 28 following the Closing  Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.

That gives NBC what, in essence, is a supersized, three-hour comedy block on Thursday. ABC earlier this month unveiled a similar gameplan on Wednesdays, with the comedic drama "Ugly Betty" moving to 10 p.m. behind the network's half-hour comedies.

NBC is giving Ron Howard's new drama "Parenthood" the best possible lead-in: It will air Tuesdays at 10 behind NBC's hottest show, "The Biggest Loser." It premieres March 2.

The network is beefing up on "Law & Order." The original-recipe Dick Wolf creation returns for season 20 with a two-hour episode Monday, March 1, and will then air Mondays at 10 starting March 8. Its lead-in: "Trauma," which returns to its 9 p.m. Monday slot on March 8.

"Law & Order: SVU," meanwhile, shifts to Wednesdays at 10 on March 3. Its lead-in: Repeats of "SVU" at 9.

On Fridays, look for NBC to go with some extra reality. The Lisa Kudrow-produced reality series "Who Do You Think You Are? bows March 5 at 8 p.m.

New game show "Minute to Win It" (previously "Perfect 10") will premiere Sunday, March 14, at 8 p.m.

And "Friday Night Lights" returns to NBC on Friday, April 30, once "Who" ends.

As for the strategy behind NBC's moves -- other than, you know, making lemonade -- scheduling chief Mitch Metcalf told TheWrap slotting "Parenthood" on Tuesday is an attempt to give the show "the best lead-in possible in 'The Biggest Loser.' The audience demographically is a perfect match for this incredibly promising new drama."

Returning Seinfeld to Thursday also seems a no-brainer.

"'The Marriage Ref' fits like a glove on Thursday night," he said. "This move creates a seamless string of sophisticated comedy from 8:00-11:00 pm. The show has star power and great relatibility as it takes on the lighter side of marriage."

Well, this explains why

Well, this explains why Seinfeld was kissing ass to NBCU.

People of Earth: NBC would

People of Earth:

NBC would do everyone, including its shareholders, a big favor if they moved the Jay Leno Show to a two-hour Saturday night extravaganza. (Let CBS and ABC ghettoize Saturday nights with repeats if they wish.) A weekly, two-hour Leno show would cost less than a half-hour strip. Think of it as Sabado Gigante en ingles. Then Conan stays put and either sinks or swims with improved lead-in numbers.

You're welcome, Jeff and Jeff. (Ya mooks!)

The Marriage Ref isn't a

The Marriage Ref isn't a comedy show, it's a reality show produced by a man who used to be funny or TV for a living.

There's a vast difference.

So CBS is dominant every

So CBS is dominant every night of the week at 10p, so they have no issues.

What does ABC do now? Well Sun, Mon, and Thurs seem covered.
I think they need to start programming Tues at 10p agressively NOW. V doesnt start til March 30th. They have LOST starting Feb 2nd, with 10p available starting Feb 9th it would be cool if they used that 10p slot for something that could hold onto the LOST audience. To me, that means something not heavy, sci fi.

OR maybe soemthing LOST related. The day after LOST, hell the minute after LOST ends, there are tons of fans, online magazine recappers, dissecting the episode and revelations. Wouldnt it be cool if ABC aired something like a LOST discussion group with a panel of LOSTologists ala DOC JENSEN from EW, maybe a famous fan like Whoopi Goldberg and maybe someone from LOST's creative team, Obviously Darlton might not want to do it, but maybe a recurring charcter like William Mapother. The 4th spot could be filled by a regular fan. Get them around a round table, keep the tone of the show very light, but informative. Just an idea.

A shame re: UGLY BETTY because the show is having its best season creatively since the first, but the numbers still are low. If they run that show consecutively their season will be done late March (assuming production is). Wed at 10p should be free April/May. Assuming the rumors are true that ABC is planning on running multi cam ROMANTICALLY CHALLENGED Mon at 9:30 against TBBT, Id suggest run it at 10p Wed as part of comedy Wednesday (maybe CT reruns go at 10:30). With CBS and NBC running crime procedurals, it would be the alternative, plus it would extend Comedy Wednesday for 3 hours and would give RM a chance to succeed. Going against the #1 comedy and also the #1 show on TV in the demo, me thinks its not gonna have a shot. Well that and the fact that ABC tried comedies there twice and they both didnt work and that was when CBS 9:30 comedy was their weakest link, not their strongest.
