Sen. Gloria Romero: Send Polanski Back
In what may portend a new role for Roman Polanski as a poster boy for domestic violence causes, California State Senator Gloria Romero (D-East L.A.) has sent a letter to District Attorney Steve Cooley supporting his efforts to extradite the director from Switzerland.
Romero linked the Polanski case to the state’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“Nothing better illustrates the importance of heightening public awareness about this issue,” Romero wrote Cooley, “than the recent headlines about the Roman Polanski case and we support your efforts of his extradition to the United States.”
Following some footnoted stats correlating domestic violence with sexual assaults, Romero acknowledged “how magnanimous his victim was by her forgiveness of his crime against her and, certainly, her words will carry weight in a court of law. But, nonetheless, closure is expected and needed.”
In other words, don’t let Polanski off with a party foul.
Romero’s letter was signed by 14 other legislators, mostly Democrats, including Assembly speaker Karen Bass (D-L.A.).
Teala Schaff, Romero’s press secretary, told TheWrap that the 120-member legislature’s being out of session limited the number of signatures that could be gathered in a timely way.
What is clear from the letter is the thorny position that Polanski’s magnanimous victim, Samantha Geimer, is putting the D.A. in. Only last week Geimer’s attorney again reiterated Geimer’s plea that Polanski not be extradited or punished – basing her request partly on the alleged judicial misconduct surrounding the original case three decades ago, as well as Geimer’s desire to escape the tabloid limelight to which she says she’s been subjected to since Polanski’s Sept. 26 arrest in Zurich.
Geimer has no legal say in Polanski’s extradition, or in how L.A.’s Superior Court deals with him if and when he is returned here.
“The law is the law,” is how Schaff describes Romero’s position. Nevertheless, Geimer’s impassioned request might carry plenty of weight should Polanski be resentenced, or if a new trial is considered – one that would rely on Geimer’s cooperation. Romero’s letter may be seen as strengthening the hand of the pro-prosecution forces on Temple Street.
Meanwhile, author Gore Vidal has created a bit of a stir with his Polanski-case comments on the Atlantic
Monthly’s website. In a Q&A with John Meroney, Vidal described Geimer, circa 1977, as “a young hooker.”
Vidal claims that both the media and Hollywood spin on the case was much different back then.
“The idea,” Vidal says, “that this girl was in her communion dress, a little angel all in white, being raped by this awful Jew, Polacko – that’s what people were calling him – well, the story is totally different now from what it was then . . . Anti-Semitism got poor Polanski. He was also a foreigner. He did not subscribe to American values in the least. To [his persecutors], that seemed vicious and unnatural.”
The Atlantic’s Meroney did not ask Vidal his thoughts about Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

TThere is a FREE SPEECH issue with the documentary movie “Polanski Wanted and Desired,” a movie that Roman Polanski did not make, which pertain to the arrest of Polanski in Switzerland 32 years after the fact, because the arrest is a retaliation for Marina Zenovich's movie that exposes the Judicial & Prosecutorial Misconduct that occurred against Roman Polanski in the Santa Monica Courthouse in 1977 & 78.
So Polanski has received a double whammy - first the Judicial & Prosecutorial Misconduct in 1977 & 78 against him in his case, and then 32 years later a retaliation against him for its exposure.
The Swiss and Los Angeles Prosecutors could have arrested Roman Polanski at any time at his home in Switzerland.
But there was no real interest until director Marina Zenovich's movie, Polanski - Wanted And Desired was released.
The movie included authentic original footage of the Judge from the Santa Monica Courthouse, California in 1977 & 1978, and an interview with a Prosecutor who was not officially assigned to the case, and all of this made the Los Angeles authorities look bad.
The movie showed Judicial & Prosecutorial misconduct against Polanski with backroom dealings in Judges chambers, staged hearings, and the Judge reneging on a plea deal.
In addition the Judge was going to illegally take away Polanski’s right to fight deportation – which discriminatory measure coupled with the other discriminatory measure to not prosecute a 17 year old American who was also having sex with the same underage girl did give a slant to the proceedings
Perhaps Los Angeles should have arrested Marina Zenovich for making the movie, instead of Polanski, since Polanski did not make that movie,
but somebody had to take the rap, and Polanski was vulnerable so Polanski was arrested on the way to a Swiss film festival which was about to honor him, to maximize the shock and awe of his arrest 32 years after the fact.
The Los Angeles authorities also waited until 2 days after Roman Polanski’s American wife and child’s murderer had died in a California prison before arresting him.
Only 2 days…
The fall out from arresting Roman Polanski on the way to the 2009 Swiss Film Festival in Zurich has a chilling effect on ALL filmmakers around the world, because the arrest is a Swiss betrayal not only to Polanski, but also is an affront to ALL the world's filmmakers.
So much for Free Speech. Free Speech is being frozen out of the movies in this way…
Los Angeles should not have used Switzerland’s Film Festival for a purpose for which it was not intended – to bait Roman Polanski - and then switch it into his arrest, nor should the Swiss Officials have allowed their film festival to be misused and tainted in this manner.
Now Polanski’s arrest is ambiguous, regardless of Los Angeles stated reason for the arrest, since he has been highly visible and easy to apprehend all along.
It is questionable whether Polanski was really arrested for consensual sex with an underage girl after all these years. It is more likely to be a convenie nt pretext, and its far more likely that Polanski was arrested in retaliation since Judicial and Prosecutorial misconduct was exposed, and the Los Angeles authorities looked bad, because Marina Zenovich’s documentary movie “Polanski: Wanted and Desired was released.”
Just as there is a causal link between Police corruption and Police brutality, See Mollens Commission in New York, there is also a causal link between Judicial & Prosecutorial Misconduct and retaliation for exposing it, in the form of an arrest 32 years too late.
In U.S. v. Jannotti 673 F.2d 578, 614 (3d Cir. 1982) the Judge stated "There is no crueler tyranny than that which is exercised under cover of law, and with the colors of justice ..."
If Los Angeles cared so much for the little girl in 1977 the authorities would not have permitted Polanski to go abroad to make a movie before the mandatory non-appealable psychiatric evaluation, which was a prison sentence that he completed,
If Los Angeles cared so much about the little girl the authorities certainly would not be prolonging her agony now when she has demanded closure.
And if Los Angeles cared so much about raped girls and women they would not currently be behind in testing the rape kits to ensure Justice for these victims.

In Roman Polanski's case in 1977 a plea bargain agreement got corrupted into bait and switch justice when a photograph of Roman Polanski sitting next to smiling German girls at the Oktoberfest infuriated the Santa Monica Judge so much, and made him so jealous, that the Judge retaliated against Polanski by reneging on the plea bargain agreement, was about to sentence Polanski to a second prison term, and deprive Roman Polanski of his right to fight deportation,
This lack of Judicial integrity frightened Polanski so much that he fled.
When there is something to be covered up – and gained financially, politically, a personal score to settle - there will always be bait and switch justice in California courtrooms, Judge’s chambers, and this should not be confused with real Justice.
This bait & switch justice does not only occur in Roman Polanski’s case, since California Governmental Statutes aid and abet California's bait and switch justice system which does not treat people equally, and does not give them due process of law, and where they are deprived of their civil rights, under the color of law, and often assaulted and battered.
There is also a chilling effect for Hollywood storytelling because
if your movie ends saying “Forget it Jake it’s Chinatown”
there’s a great likelihood that this ending could turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy in Chinatown, just as it has thus far in Roman Polanski’s case…
Sherilyn Says
Lack of integrity and a broken Governmental system is something Roman Polanski, a holocaust survivor, experienced which threatened his life as a child.
Later on Roman Polanski faced a similar situation which he could well have perceived to be life threatening, since Polanski had already served prison time, and yet the Santa Monica Judge wished to illegally extort from Polanski, his right to fight deportation, or else face a harsher prison term, with the added danger of the pedophile stigmatization. The Judge was also about to renege on a plea bargain agreement, to which all parties had agreed including the prosecution.
Cut to: January 22nd, 2010 and the Los Angeles Superior Court, Judge Peter Espinoza has a brand new mantra,
"I choose to insist on the integrity of the judicial system that he [Roman Polanski] appear. The motion [for sentencing Polanski in absentia] is denied."
The County of Los Angeles Judge is insisting on the integrity of the California Judicial system, yet he is ignoring the lack of integrity in the earlier Judicial proceedings in 1977/8 and Judge Espinoza's brand new proclamation of Judicial integrity, also know as the Emperor's new clothes, does nothing to wipe out the prior Judicial and Prosecutorial misconduct by the same court against Polanski from 1977/8.
As Roman Polanski did not cause the Judicial and prosecutorial misconduct against him in the Santa Monica Courthouse 32 years ago, but instead was the victim of it, he should not be obligated to appear in the same court now.
In addition according to a Washington Newspaper in Feb 1978 the Los Angeles Court Judge Rittenband was going to sentence Roman Polanski “in absentia” Thus it is inconsistent and prejudicial that 32 years later the same County of Los Angeles Superior Court will not sentence Roman Polanski “in absentia”
Brandy Says
Why does the California Appellate Court Second District Division 7 expect people to spend their lifetime fighting Judicial Misconduct for no pay and give up their life, and be dragged into the grave through years of litigation against California who has all the money and all the lawyers in the world, and who are happy to manufacture spin while the sun don’t shine on Judicial Misconduct.
The Judicial Misconduct in Roman Polanski’s case would never have risen to the surface if Polanski had stayed in Los Angeles for Judge Laurence J. Rittenband’s illegal sentencing.
The old movie footage of Judge Laurence J. Rittenband would never have been recovered had there not be financing, and if the Judicial Misconduct not been directed against movie director Roman Polanski. Marina Zenovich also has to be thanked for her desire to look for the truth.
The Santa Monica Courthouse Judicial Misconduct in Roman Polanski’s case is not the only instance. It permeates the California Court of Appeals Second District, with Judges who are not honest enough to admit to their crime as Polanski did, because no-one in California is holding them accountable, nor does any Official in California seem to care about the bias.
So who do these California Appellate Justices think they are in thinking that people who are not lawyers should stay to fight against California Injustice even if they are from another country?
There are many more fun things to do in life than fight abuse of power and Judicial Misconduct emanating from Santa Monica Courthouse, which would give a person far more happiness and would be far more profitable!!!
California Judicial system needs to get their act together, and not abuse their power, or mete out cruel and unusual punishment, or other Judicial tricks, and they should also not protect California Government Officials and employees - over those who are vulnerable or those who are not American Citizens - because that is not justice and it just ain't fair!!!!
The California Appellate Opinion does not mention the discrimination against Roman Polanski at Santa Monica Courthouse– since Judge Laurence J Rittenband’s threatened punishment - to trash his civil rights, would not have been possible if Roman Polanski had been a Citizen of U.S.A, and Roman Polanski would not have had to flee if Roman Polanski been American, and thus within the proposed illegal sentencing to force him to agree to deportation, lies the prejudice.
Roman Polanski and others have not signed on - to prop up the California Judicial System or be its guardians, and sit deteriorating in California's jails for years and years and years, or make a Mont Blanc of paperwork in a bid for freedom, while California Judges continue to say no and be unfair while being paid a fat check.
Just as the American People no longer want to pay for Wall Street & the Big banks excesses and greed with their Las Vegas style behavior that brought this country to its knees and on the brink of financial doom.
Get a clue California! Practice what you preach. Stop scapegoating Roman Polanski and his action to flee judicial misconduct –his healthy instinct for self preservation, in order to divert attention away from your own Judicial sins.

The Fifteen California lawmakers would be better off in making some law that would prohibit American sexual assault offenders and corrupt police and Officials who are working in California’s Schools from BEING ABOVE THE LAW
Currently if you work for a California school and sexually assault your student from behind in a class - the police & County of Los Angeles Santa Monica Justice system will help the school and the sexual predator to cover up the sexual assault caused by the California teacher, and will further assault and batter the victim of sexual assault, in a staged "hearing" at Santa Monica Courthouse that is designed to have no due process of law.
But if you don't work for California –and you are a French/Polish citizen you don't get a free pass like the California photography teacher...instead at Santa Monica Courthouse you face having civil rights taken away from you through illegal Judicial coercion, discrimination, and are forced to flee in the face of a Santa Monica Judge's Injustice.
And so... THERE'S THE RUB, THE DUPLICITY, THE HYPOCRISY of the County of Los Angeles Santa Monica Courthouse where JUSTICE IS NOT BLIND, AND WHERE JUSTICE IS A BULLY!

Many want to wrap themselves in the sexual details and wallow in Roman Polanski’s alleged crime, people disregard the Judicial Misconduct and the victimization of Roman Polanski.
by either paying no attention to the later Santa Monica Judicial abuse of power against Roman Polanski, or alternatively condoning the Santa Monica Judge’s wish to illegally punish Roman Polanski nearly 32 years ago
If you care about justice – then a person should be punished for an alleged crime but not illegally punished, which is what Roman Polanski was facing in Santa Monica.
Roman Polanski’s legacy will be not only did he make great movies
And not only did Roman Polanski survive Hitler’s Holocaust as a child,
And not only did Roman Polanski survive the Manson killings of his beautiful American wife and child,
But after that he managed to make a movie called China Town, and after making that movie about injustice in California he did not give in to the politics of China Town in his own life, THE INHERENT INJUSTICE OF THE CALIFORNIA SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE.
Also to be thanked is Marina Zenovich who expertly made the documentary Polanski: Wanted and Desired, which documents the Injustice of the Santa Monica Courthouse and makes it quite VISIBLE.
This is a wonderful public service because it helps Roman Polanski’s case and in addition it helps others because this is not the only instance of INJUSTICE AT THE SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE - INVOLVING STAGED HEARINGS THAT HAS BEEN LINGERING ON FOR YEARS.
ROMAN POLANSKI'S LEGACY WILL BE THAT HE STOOD UP TO INJUSTICE AT SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE AND BY FLYING AWAY FROM INJUSTICE - ULTIMATELY HE MADE THE INJUSTICE VISIBLE
Holly Greene Says
In response to Sprocket
Testimony given at a grand jury are not necessarily the facts.
A Judge or a Jury has to determine the facts as Roman Polanski has his side of the story also.
In addition Sprocket is omitting the facts that occured at the Santa Monica Courthouse. which make up the totality of the circumstances.
In addition there was no trial in the Polanski case for anyone to determine what the facts were. There was only a plea bargain
In addition 32 years ago the Santa Monica justice system did get past the sad details and Polanski served 42 days in Chino and then the prison officials wanted to let him go as did the victim and her family.
In addition just because Polanski is a foreign famous artist who is to be sentenced for an alleged crime does not give the Santa Monica Judge Laurence J Rittenband a license to illegally take Polanski's right to dispute deportation away, or illegally punish him, because he is not American.
Polanski was not facing punishment he was facing ILLEGAL PUNISHMENT and that is why he fled. The ELECTED JUDGE WAS ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT HOW HE LOOKED TO THE PUBLIC, HE DID NOT CARE ABOUT ACTING FAIRLY.
In that sense we must be thankful to Roman Polanski for pointing out the Injustice at the Santa Monica Courthouse as it does not exist only in his case.
Sprocket Says
For those who have read in detail Ms. Geimer's grand jury testimony, it's clear the then 13-year-old was given alcohol and drugs before being anally raped by Polanski.
Those are the facts.

The People of California and the World should be extremely grateful to Roman Polanski for holding out against Injustice he was facing at Santa Monica Courthouse.
If Roman Polanski hadn't held out against injustice we would be in the dark about Injustice occurring at Santa Monica Courthouse.
BUT FOR POLANSKI'S ACTION - THE INJUSTICE AT COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE - WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE VISIBLE AND WOULD HAVE REMAINED INVISIBLE AND COVERED UP.
If the Injustice remained under wraps and invisible - then no steps would ever be taken to rectify the Injustice that is occurring against the World's people in the County of Los Angeles Santa Monica Courthouse.
If Polanski had let himself be compromised by Injustice, and had given in to Injustice - then Injustice will continue to flourish in Santa Monica County of Los Angeles Courthouse with a Justice that is a bully and a Justice that is not blind.
So bottom line INJUSTICE
Mildred Says
Someone said "The Rapist is so stupid. He would have already been set free had he just come out and face the Judge."
But there are different ways of looking at things.
As far as I can see – Roman Polanski served his unappealable time of 42 days. The Chino Prison Officials did not recommend any more Jail time. And the Santa Monica Judge was about to renege on a plea bargain that had been previously arranged for no good reason as sitting next to girls at the Oktoberfest is not a California crime.
Roman Polanski did not yield to Injustice at Santa Monica Courthouse, and this is what he would have had to do -if he accepted the Santa Monica Judge’s illegal punishment to eviscerate Polanski’s legal right to dispute deportation.
Instead Polanski flew away from illegal and coercive punishment that the Judge was giving him at Santa Monica Courthouse.
Polanski's stand against Injustice in Los Angeles is heroic, as the illegal force was against him.
The People of California should be extremely grateful to Roman Polanski for holding out against Injustice he was facing at Santa Monica Courthouse.
This is because it is now being publicized in this case, and the People of California also need to thank Marina Zenovich and the other filmakers for showing and proving the Injustice of the Santa Monica Court Laurence J. Rittenband in her Movie Polanski: Wanted & Desired.

Not facing a "reasonable" sentence. Do you know the law? It is within the law that a judge can rescind any plea deal. I'm sure any pedophile like Polanski would think his punishment isn't reasonable. It is also within the law to deport a non citizen for committing a felony - it happens every day in this country.
Justice? What Justice? Justice is having Roman Polanski's old butt sit in jail, as he's doing right now. Justice is long over due and America is getting justice right now. Whether Polanski comes back to America to serve time or not, it doesn't matter... he's already serving time. That is what I call Justice and it doesn't look like he'll be getting out any time soon. He now pays the time for the crime he plead guilty to 30 years ago.

Apparently California State lawmaker Gloria Romero and 14 other legislators have written a letter in support of the extradition of Roman Polanski to Los Angeles, saying the effort makes an important statement about the seriousness of domestic violence. These people are out of touch with what is going on in California if they have to use a 32 year old case to demonstrate their product - i.e. domestic violence.
I am sure California State Lawmaker Gloria Romero’s heart is in the right place. Perhaps she should focus more on California Official, Police and Judicial cover up of sexual assault in Santa Monica California as official cover up of sexual assault in California’s High Schools, & Universities is far more insidious, and potentially deadly.
Also in California people seem to care so little about sexual assault they won't even pick up a phone to call the police when it is staring them in the face in Richmond California.
Also California State Legislator Gloria Romero is misrepresenting the totality of the circumstances. Because it cannot be true that Roman Polanski flew away to escape punishment because he had already returned to America once from Europe to comply with Judge Laurence J. Rittenband and served 42 days, and Chino prison officials said he should serve no further prison time.
As Roman Polanski served his sentence at Chino of 42 days, it follows that he would have completed any other reasonable sentence from Santa Monica Judge Laurence J. Rittenband , but Polanski was not facing a reasonable sentence he was facing illegal coercion and deportation against his will.
So it follows that Roman Polanski’s flight from Los Angeles is not only being misunderstood but is ALSO BEING MISREPRESENTED BY CALIFORNIA LEGISLATORS who want to scape goat Roman Polanski, to cover up their own California Santa Monica Courthouse Judicial Sin!!
Oh the horror the horror, of the Injustice
Remember Nina Simone who sang “But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good: Oh Lord! Please don't let me be misunderstood ...” These could be Polanski's words.
I believe that Roman Polanski’s flight from Los Angeles was not so much about avoiding punishment, but more TO NOT BE FORCED INTO HAVING TO ACCEPT INJUSTICE, where he was being illegally coerced and threatened into agreeing to deportation and mistreated in the County of Los Angeles Santa Monica Courthouse by Judge Laurence J. Rittenband who was taking Polanski’s civil rights away.
In one sense Roman Polanski can be considered a hero in the face of Injustice because he did not give in to it.
Here is a wonderful notion - Roman Polanski is dong the People of California a great service in not caving in to INJUSTICE at County of Los Angeles Santa Monica Courthouse,
Roman Polanski's plight is bringing World attention to THE INJUSTICE AT SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE, with the wonderful dedicated & expert and super assistance of Marina Zenovich and everyone else who made the documentary movie, Polanski: Wanted and Desired, and the honesty of lawyers Douglas Dalton, Roger Gunson, and David Wells as well, which is a rare thing in Los Angeles.
