Indie Box Office: $75K Per Screen for ‘To Rome with Love’

Woody Allen's latest, "To Rome With Love," takes in $379K from five screens in its debut. "Best Exotic" and "Moonrise Kingdom" roll on.

Art house audiences showed plenty of love for "To Rome With Love." Woody Allen's latest took in $379,371 from five screens in its debut, a whopping $75,874 per-screen average.

The per-screen number for "To Rome" is the summer's second-best, behind only "Moonrise Kingdom," which opened in four theaters with a $130,749 average in May.

Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Ellen Page and Jesse Eisenberg star in the Sony Classics film. Allen's previous movie, "Midnight in Paris," was released last summer and went on to gross $56 million, best-ever for an Allen film, and earn an Academy Award Best Picture nomination.

"The Invisible War," a documentary from Kirby Dick about rape in the U.S. military, made $16,500 on four screens in its debut for Cinedigm, a $4,125 average.

"Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" continued as the summer's biggest breakout indie hit in its eighth week, taking in $1.6 million from 741 screens, a $2,179 per-screen average. The John Madden-directed tale of Brit retirees in India is sure to cross $40 million in the U.S. now — it's at $38.3 million — and could break $50 million. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson star. Its worldwide gross is now over $120 million.

Focus Features' "Moonrise Kingdom" expanded from 178 to 395 screens took in $3.4 million, a very-impressive $8,635 per-screen average for Wes Anderson's tale of tween love. It's overall U.S. gross stands at $11.6 million after five weeks.

Film District expanded "Safety Not Guaranteed" from 47 to 129 screens in its third weekend and rang up $482,000, a 63 percent increase from last week and a $3,736 per-screen average for the comedy, which has crossed the $1 million mark overall. Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass star in the film about a magazine works who answer a time-travel ad. Colin Trevorrow directs.

IFC Films' "Your Sister's Sister" expanded from 13 to 47 screens in its second weekend and grossed $216,200 for a $4,600 per-screen average.
