Indie Box Office: ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Shines in Expansion

Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" averages $53K per screen at 16 theaters for Focus. "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" keeps rolling

"Moonrise Kingdom," Wes Anderson's tale of tween love, continued to impress at the specialty box office for Focus Features.

The opening film at this year's Cannes film festival took in $848,681 after expanding from four to 16 theaters, for an eye-popping per-screen average of $53,043.

That gives it a U.S. gross of $1.4 million after two weeks in limited release.

Anderson directs the film he wrote with Roman Coppola and produced with Scott Rudin. Set in the 1960s, the film chronicles two tween lovers who flee their New England island town and the search that ensues. The ensemble cast features Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, Frances McDormand and Jason Schwartzman.

Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight's "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" is becoming a fixture in the top ten, marking its fourth week there. It made another $4.6 million from 1,294 theaters over the weekend, a drop of just 25% from last week.

The movie, which follows a group of British retirees in India, has now made $25.4 million in the U.S. and $106.7 million worldwide.

The Weinstein Co.'s French import "The Intouchables" expanded from four to 50 theaters and took in $350,156 for a per-screen average of $7,004.

Millennium Entertainment's "Bernie" added $937,296 from 302 theaters in its sixth week of release. That was a $3,104 per screen average, and upped its U.S. gross to $3.6 million.

"Crooked Arrow," from Branded Entertainment, made $727,721 from 325 theaters in its third week.
