Instagram Releases Android App 30M Users Later

Instagram, the rapidly growing photo sharing application, has launched its Android version

Instagram, the widely popular photo-sharing app, has come to Android.

Launched in October of 2010, Instagram has already accrued more than 30 million users,  even though it has only been available on the iPhone and iPad. Following the path of many apps, it established a foothold with the Apple products and now moves on to the larger but more fragmented Android market.

“When we started working on Instagram, we tried to imagine what the world would be like if every single person on earth could share the world around them through the lens on their phones. With the release of Instagram for Android, we’re one step closer to making that goal a reality,” the company said on its blog.

CEO Kevin Systrom said at South by Southwest that the Android version would be coming soon, and pre-registration opened March 25. Since then, 400,000 people have signed up for the Android app.

In making the announcement, Instagram released some more impressive numbers — more than 1 billion photos, 5 million photos uploaded per day and 81 comments per second.

Now that it is available on the other dominant smart phone platform, those numbers can only go up.
