‘Interstellar’ Didn’t Hit $50 Million at Weekend Box Office, Final Figures Show (Video)

Paramount’s Sunday estimate is too high and Christopher Nolan’s space epic finishes the three days with $47.5 million

“Interstellar” brought in $47.5 million at the box office this weekend, about $2.5 million less than Paramount Pictures estimated on Sunday, according to final figures released Monday morning.

Christopher Nolan‘s space epic finished behind Disney Animation’s “Big Hero 6,” which was No. 1 with $56.2 million.

On Sunday mornings, the studios project numbers for their movies’ Sunday performance based on Friday and Saturday numbers. It’s not unusual to be off, but the estimates rarely prove low.

The drop means that “Interstellar” didn’t hit $50 million for the weekend however; had it done so, it would have been just the fourth time ever two movies have opened to more than $50 million on the same weekend.

“Interstellar,” which opened Wednesday in a series of limited IMAX and special film screenings, has taken in a total of $49.6 million domestically.

Final international numbers from the weekend came in Monday too, and those showed “Interstellar” took in $82.9 million — nearly $3 million over the Sunday estimates of Warner Bros., which is overseeing the film’s overseas rollout.
