It’s Baaack: ‘Eat Pray Love’ No. 1 at Foreign Box Office

Julia Roberts’ rom-dram resurfaces with strong performance overseas

Remember “Eat Pray Love,” that Julia Roberts joint that opened solid in the U.S. way back in August and then dropped off the radar?

No. 1 at the foreign box office. You read that right.

Thanks to No. 1 opens in seven markets this weekend – Australia led them with $3.57 million – the estro-journey of self-discovery topped the offshore market with $17.4 million while playing on 4,280 screens in 56 markets.

That brings Ryan Murphy’s rom-dram to a foreign box office total of $64.1 million since opening Aug. 12.

Another movie that came out in the states some time ago was No. 2 on the weekend: the animated comedy “Despicable Me” took home $16.6 million from 3,500 screens in 35 territories, topping the box office in France and Spain with $5.3 and $3.1 million, respectively.

“Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” was third offshore, with $11.3 million overall.

Fourth and fifth were “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” ($10.28 million) and “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” which had spent several weeks at No. 1 but finally slipped with $8 million in foreign receipts.
