Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in ‘Django Unchained’

Will Smith reportedly passed on the role in Quentin Tarantino’s slave-era western

Quentin Tarantino has lined up Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio for his slave-era western "Django Unchained," TheWrap confirmed Wednesday.

Foxx has the lead role, a former slave named Django.

DiCaprio plays Calvin Candie, a plantation owner and all-around rotten guy.

The movie is about a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter, to be played by Christoph Waltz, who buys a slave, Django, to help him identify a wanted man. Ultimately, the dentist and Django become friends, and the dentist helps Django rescue his wife from Candie, an evil plantation owner.

Like "Inglorious Basterds," Tarantino's first collaboration with Waltz, "Django Unchained" features a whole lot of killing. Waltz's character doesn't arrest the men he hunts down — he kills them. And he teaches Django to do the same.

Will Smith had been offered the Django role.

The Weinstein Company will release the movie domestically. Sony Pictures will handle it internationally.
