Javier Bardem in Final Negotiations for ‘The Dark Tower’

Ron Howard is producing and directing the story about a gunslinger who searches for a tower that may help him save his dying world

Javier Bardem is in final negotiations to star in the movie trilogy and television series  based on Stephen King's "The Dark Tower," TheWrap has confirmed.

He will play Roland Deschain in the adaptation of the literary series, which spans seven novels. The author has described the series as his "magnum opus."

In the story, Deschain is the last member of a knightly order of gunslingers who goes on a quest to find the "Dark Tower," which connects all universes.

Ron Howard is directing and producing the movie and will direct the first television episode.

Akiva Goldsman wrote the movie script. Howard's Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer is producing with Goldsman and King.

Goldsman's Weed Road will produce the television.

More than 30 million copies of the series have been sold, and in 2009, King announced an eighth book.

Bardem is repped by WME.

Deadline first reported the news.
