Universal chose the Academy Award winner for the lead role in the spinoff movie
Universal has offered Jeremy Renner the lead role in its next "Bourne" movie, TheWrap has confirmed.
Matt Damon bowed out of the popular series after 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum."
Renner won't play Jason Bourne — he will take on the starring role as another government operative. The next installment, titled "The Bourne Legacy," will be directed by Tony Gilroy, who also wrote the script, as he did the previous three installments in the franchise.
Damon starred as Bourne in the first three films in the lucrative franchise, but bowed out of the fourth installment.
Renner was nominated for an Academy Award for "The Hurt Locker" and for "The Town."
