Vice President Joe Biden officiated a gay wedding between two longtime White House aides on Monday at the Naval Observatory, which is the V.P.’s official residence.

Joe Mahshie and Brian Mosteller were married by Biden, who never officiated a wedding before and had to get a special temporary certification from the District of Columbia to make it legal, according to the New York Post.

The vice president was an early supporter of same-sex marriage and publicly encouraged President Barack Obama to do the same.

“Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys,” Biden tweeted.

The White House told the Post that the couple asked Biden to officiate.

Biden has emerged as a beloved figure in American politics and his speech at last week’s Democratic Convention was extremely well received. Many political pundits and experts believe that he would be the Democratic nominee if he would have run for president. Biden was not up for the campaign after the tragic death of his son, Beau, occurred shortly before he would have started campaigning.

TheWrap recently learned that Biden is set to appear on the long-running NBC procedural “Law & Order: SVU.”
