Johnny Depp Channels Hunter S. Thompson Again in ‘Rum Diary’ Trailer (Video)

“Fear and Loathing” star explores gonzo journalist’s early years in new film, out Oct. 28

Johnny Depp is going gonzo once more.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star — who portrayed journalist Hunter S. Thompson in the 1998 adaptation of Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" — stars in the upcoming FilmDistrict offering "The Rum Diary," which is based on Thompson's first novel of the same name.

In the film, Depp plays Thompson's alter-ego Paul Kemp, an itinerant reporter who travels to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to work at a newspaper and finds himself enmeshed in web of booze, chaos and corruption. Maybe he should consider himself lucky — at least there aren't any bats swarming his car this time…

"The Rum Diary," which opens Oct. 28, also stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard and Richard Jenkins. In the meantime, dig into the bad craziness below.
