Johnny Depp-Gwyneth Paltrow Comedy ‘Mortdecai’ Gets Release Date

Lionsgate schedules the David Koepp-directed tale of an international art dealer for early next year

“Mortdecai,” the action comedy starring Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow, will open in wide release on Feb. 5, 2015, Lionsgate said Wednesday.

David Koepp directs “Mortdecai,” in which Depp plays a roguish international art dealer chasing a stolen painting that has the code to a bank account filled with Nazi gold. Paltrow plays his wife, and the supporting cast includes Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Olivia Munn, Oliver Platt, Aubrey Plaza, Jeff Goldblum.

Koepp co-wrote with Peter Baynham and Eric Aronson. Depp produced “Mortdecai,” along with Christi Dembrowski and Andrew Lazar. Gigi Pritzkeris the executive producer.

The date puts it up against Warner Bros.’ Liam Neeson action film “Run All Night” and Universal’s action fantasy “Seventh Son.”

Depp is coming off one of his worst box-office openings ever — the sci-fi film “Transcendence” took in less than $11 million in its domestic debut last weekend — and he has been in a box-office slump since 2011’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

He has several movies coming up, including Kevin Smith’s horror film “Tusk,” the mystery thriller “London Fields” (with Amber Heard) and “Into the Woods,” all of which are expected to see fall releases. He is also set to play Whitey Bulger in the mob drama “Black Mass,” which is set for 2015.
