Jon Stewart on Petraeus Affair: Fox News Has Discovered New Obama Conspiracy

"The Daily Show" host faults himself for not figuring out that Paula Broadwell was too close to David Petraeus

Jon Stewart was full of mock-praise for Fox News and conservative talking heads for unraveling the conspiracy to keep news of David Petraeus' sex scandal from going public before President Obama won reelection last week.

But "The Daily Show" host faulted himself for not following the trail of breadcrumbs left by Petraeus biographer and four-star general paramour Paula Broadwell when she appeared on his program last January.

During their interview, Broadwell talked about Petraeus' strong work ethic and mentorship of underlings.

"The whole thing was like innuendo after innuendo, and the whole time I’m like duh,” Stewart said. “I had her right there talking about how thick a coat of awesome sauce Petraeus is bathed in. The thing never crossed my f—ing mind!”

Now that Petraeus' peccadillos have been revealed, conservative pundits are slamming the White House for not pushing the general out of his post as head of the CIA prior to Election Day.

Moreover, they are implying that his ouster will prevent him from testifying to Congress about the circumstances surrounding the killings of embassy officials in Libya last September.

"Now we’ll never know what Petraeus knew unless quitting is different from dying and has no bearing on whether Petraeus will have to testify," Stewart joked.
