‘Jurassic Park 4′ Release Delayed, ’21 Jump Street 2’ Moves In (Updated)

Universal shifts its sequel off June 13, 2014, and Sony movies in with comedy sequel

Universal is pushing back the release date on "Jurassic Park 4," the studio announced Wednesday. The third sequel to Steven Spielberg's epic action-adventure had been set to roll out on June 13, 2014.

Universal didn't announce a new opening date, and Sony didn't waste any time seizing the newly opened slot for its comedy sequel "21 Jump Street 2," which had been scheduled to debut one week earlier, on June 6, 2014. The original film starred Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and was a surprise hit for Sony, rolling up $138 million at domestic box office and $200 million worldwide last year.

Universal was short on specfiics regarding its decision to delay "Jurassic Park 4."

"In coordination with filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise," Universal said in a statement.

"We could not be more excited about the vision that Colin Trevorrow has created for this film, and we look forward to watching as he and the producers create another great chapter in this franchise's storied history," the statement continued. Director Trevorrow ("Safety Not Guaranteed") came aboard the project in March.

“Jurassic Park” was a bona fide blockbuster when it came out in 1993.. It brought in more than $900 million worldwide and surpassed another Spielberg film, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” to become the highest-grossing film up to that time. Two sequels followed, "The Lost World" in 1997 and "Jurassic Park 3" in 2001. In all, the franchise has taken in more than $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office.

Universal released a 3D version of "Jurassic Park" in April, which has taken in nearly $45 million at the domestic box office.
