Justin Bieber Crashes Crowded Christmas Day at Box Office

Concert documentary starring the pop phenom will open against four other wide releases and slew of expanding Oscar hopefuls

Pop star Justin Bieber’s concert documentary “Believe” will hit theaters on Wednesday, Dec. 25, Open Road Films said Wednesday.

Already scheduled to open wide on Christmas Day are Paramount’s Chris Pine action movie “Jack Ryan,” Fox’s Ben Stiller comedy “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” the Sly Stallone-Robert De Niro boxing spoof “Grudge Match” and the Keannu Reeves action drama “47 Ronin” from Universal.

The Meryl Streep-Julia Roberts drama “August: Osage County” from the Weinstein Company will have a limited opening that day as well. It’s one of several Oscar hopefuls that will be looking to carve out a niche around the holiday.

At the same time, Sony will be expanding “American Hustle” and TWC will do the same with “Winnie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” Paramount’s “Labor Day,” from director Jason Reitman, will also be adding theaters.

Jon M. Chu (“G.I. Joe: Retaliation”), who directed the young singer’s 2011 concert movie “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” is back for this one. It’s produced by Bieber, his manager Scooter Braun, Usher Raymond and Bill O’Dowd. Garrett Grant is also a producer, from SB Films and Dolphin Films.

“Believe” will target a different demographic and will surely bring out hordes of the young star’s rabid fans. “Never Say Never” brought in nearly $100 million at the global box office. As part of the promotional push for “Believe,” a new Bieber song will be released each Monday leading up to the movie’s release.
