Justin Timberlake to Get Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Play VMAs

Previous recipient was his ex, Britney Spears

Justin Timberlake will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and perform at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Timberlake is tied with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the most VMA nods this year. He has six, including for Video of the Year.

The awards will be held in Brooklyn's new Barclays Center arena on Aug. 25.

Timberlake joins previously announced performers Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

The last winner of a Video Vanguard Award was Timberlake's ex, Britney Spears, who won in 2011. Spears performed with Timberlake's group 'N Sync at the VMAs 100 million years ago, in 1999.

Past Vanguard winners include Madonna, Peter Gabriel, REM, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Spears, who was the last artist to receive the award, back in 2011. 

MTV Hits, MTV’s 24-hour music channel will feature a one-hour block of Timberlake's music videos and performances Thursday at 3 p.m. ET/PT.

MTV also announced Thursday that the VMA pre-show will feature live performances from YouTube sensation Austin Mahone and Nickelodeon actress Ariana Grande, who the network calls the "new faces of pop."
