AllThingsD Creators Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg Reveal New Venture: Re/code

The new website launches at midnight Thursday; AllThingsD already redirecting to WSJ.com

Tech news website AllThingsD closed its doors Tuesday night, but founders Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg marked the occasion by announcing their new site, Re/code, which launches at midnight on Thursday.

A message titled “HAPPY RE/NEW YEAR!” welcomes visitors to the site for now.

“While we think tech news is important, it’s a better day to refresh, reimagine, reinvent and, most of all, rest,” Swisher and Mossberg wrote.

“But get ready: Re/code will launch at midnight ET, January 2.”

Swisher and Mossberg cut ties with the News Corp-owned AllThingsD in September 2013 and did not succeed in negotiations to retain rights to the name. AllThingsD has been subsumed into the new Wall Street Journal tech section, WSJ.D.

Swisher wrote a final post on AllThingsD, just hours before the site disappeared:

This is the last day of the All Things Digital site, which began life in April of 2007 as a year-round extension of the D conference we launched in 2003. Since then, we have published nearly 40,000 posts and attracted millions of loyal readers.

Starting January 2, we’ll have an all-new site and suite of conferences, with a different name and Web address, run as an independent company with great investors and partners. It’s likely that you’ll hear a lot about it.
