Branagh said joining the United Kingdom's highest order in the year of the queen's Diamond Jubilee and London's Olympics was a particular distinction.

"It's been a hell of a year for the U.K.," he said, "and I feel very honored to be a tiny part of it."

The "Henry V" director was knighted at Buckingham Palace for his services to drama and his philanthropy in Northern Ireland, where he was born.

The Shakespearean actor joins the late thespian Sir Laurence Olivier, whom he played in "My Week With Marilyn" in the Order of Knights, which also boasts Elton John, Paul McCartney, Ben Kingsley, Roger Moore and Charlie Chaplin.
