Kevin Macdonald Directing Bob Marley Documentary

“The Last King of Scotland” director will film the project with the cooperation of the reggae star’s family

"The Last King of Scotland" Kevin Macdonald is taking on reggae legend Bob Marley in a new documentary "Marley."

What makes this latest effort to explain the magic of the man behind "Redemption Song" and "Buffalo Soldier," is that the Marley family is participating.

"What made Bob tick is probably unanswerable but viewers will certainly feel that they know him a little better after seeing our documentary. I am grateful to the Marley family for entrusting me with their heritage," Macdonald said in a statement.

Macdonald has focused on fiction films such as "State of Play" and the upcoming "The Eagle" in recent years, but he got his start in documentaries. He won an Oscar for 1999's "One Day in September," which looked at the Israeli athlete hostage crisis at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich.

Tuff Gong Pictures / Shangri-La Entertainment will produce and the film will get a wide theatrical release in 2011 to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the singer's death.

Filming will take place in Ghana, Japan and the UK, in addition to Jamaica and the States.
