‘King’s Speech,’ ‘Black Swan’ Lead BAFTA Longlists

British Academy narrows field to 15 in each category, nominates “Biutiful” and “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” for foreign film

"The King's Speech" and "Blsck Swan" are tied for the most mentions on the British Academy of Film and Television Arts "longlists," a curious annual exercise that reduces the number of potential candidates in each category to 15.

BAFTA also announced the actual nominees for its Orange British Academy Film Awards in one category, Film Not in the English Language. Those nominees are "Biutiful," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "I Am Love," "Of Gods and Men" and Oscar winner "The Secret in Their Eyes."

The King's SpeechBecause the longlists keep the field so large in the 17 BAFTA categories, the 15 mentions for "The King's Speech" and "Black Swan" aren't indicative of final nomination totals, although "King's Speech" has to be considered the favorite.

One curious wrinkle: the longlists indicate with asterisks the five films that received the most support from the appropriate branch; in most cases, those selections are an indication of which films may receive nominations when those are announced on January 18. (In the Best Film category, branch selections are not indicated.)

Tallying mentions in the branch favorites, "The King's Speech" has 12, two more than "Black Swan," four more than "Inception" and six more than "The Social Network."

The Leading Actor candidates with the strongest actors branch support are Colin Firth ("The King's Speech"), James Franco ("127 Hours"), Javier Bardem ("Biutiful"), Jeff Bridges ("True Grit") and Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network"). Among Leading Actress contenders, special mention went to Carey Mulligan ("Never Let Me Go"), Michelle Williams ("Blue Valentine"), Natalie Portman ("Black Swan") and both Annette Bening and Julianne Moore for "The Kids Are All Right."

In the Director race, asterisks went to Danny Boyle for "127 Hours," Darren Aronofsky for "Black Swan," Christopher Nolan for "Inception," Tom Hooper for "The King's Speech" and David Fincher for "The Social Network."

At 15 selections per category, essentially every serious contender is included on the lists, with a few surprises. BAFTA voters placed "True Grit" star Hailee Steinfeld in the Leading Actress category but put Lesley Manville from "Another Year" on the Supporting Actress list, while two "Social Network" stars made the Supporting Actor list (Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, but not Armie Hammer) and three "Black Swan" actresses wound up among the Supporting Actresses: Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder and Barbara Hershey, the last of whom was the only to be asterisked.

Those not likely to make it beyond the longlist include Leading Actor candidates Johnny Depp ("Alice in Wonderland"). His costar Helena Bonham Carter was one of two actors to be longlisted twice in the same category, for "Alice" and "The King's Speech"; Andrew Garfield also received two mentions, one for "The Social Network" and one for "Never Let Me Go."

The Orange British Academy Film Awards will take place on Sunday, February 13 at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.
