If Frances Bean Cobain feels like singing the blues right now, she’ll have to do it without her father’s famous guitar.
Cobain, the daughter of deceased Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, is ceding her father’s 1959 Martin D-18E guitar to her ex-husband, Isaiah Silva, as part of the split couple’s divorce settlement, according to court papers obtained by TheWrap.
The guitar had been a bone of contention in their split, reports People, which notes that Silva maintained that the instrument, played by Cobain during Nirvana’s 1993 performance on “MTV Unplugged,” was given to him, while Cobain denied that claim.
That model of guitar can fetch upwards of $6,000, though with its provenance, the particular instrument in question is likely to be worth considerably more.
“In regard to the Martin Guitar, Petitioner states that, as of January 2014, she became the sole owner of said Guitar as she obtained all rights to said Martin Guitar from her mother,” the settlement papers read.
On the plus side for Cobain, the daughter of the Nirvana frontman and Hole singer Courtney Love, she gets to keep the couple’s house, and she’s off the hook for spousal support — Silva had previously asked for $25,000 a month.
According to the court papers, Cobain had already contributed $62,000 to Silva’s attorneys’ and accountants’ fees and costs relating to the divorce. The papers also note that Cobain paid Silva $12,000 a month in spousal support from September 2016 through June 2017.
Cobain married Silva frontman in a private ceremony on June 29, 2014, and split from him after just 21 months of marriage.
