‘Last Panthers’ Clip Dissects Elaborate Heist Scene (Exclusive Video)

Suspense thriller miniseries that inspired David Bowie song “Blackstar” is based on real life jewel thieves the Pink Panthers

A jewelry heist goes wrong in the first episode of SundanceTV’s new scripted drama series “The Last Panthers,” and a new clip takes viewers behind the elaborate scene.

The series centers on an audacious jewelry heist in Marseilles, with all the hallmarks of the infamous and recently dormant ‘Pink Panthers’ gang — but when the attempted score goes wrong and a child is killed, it’s revealed this might be the work of copycats.

Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim and John Hurt star. Additionally, David Bowie was inspired to write “Blackstar,” the first single and title track off of his last album, after screening a cut of “The Last Panthers.”

The song serves as the main title for the sensational crime drama.

The series is based on the work of French journalist Jérôme Pierrat and is co-created and written by Jack Thorne (“The Fades,” “This Is England”). The series, shot in four countries — the U.K., France, Serbia and Montenegro — and three languages, is directed by Johan Renck (“Bloodline,” “Breaking Bad”) and executive produced by Caroline Benjo (“The Returned”) and Jimmy Desmarais (“The Returned”) of Haut et Court, Peter Carlton (“This Is England”) of Warp Films, Johan Renck and Jack Thorne.

“The Last Panthers” premieres Wednesday, April 13 at 10 p.m. ET on SundanceTV.
