‘Deadpool 2:’ Star Lewis Tan on Shatterstar’s ’90s Look and His Family’s ‘Batman’ Connection (Video)

“I kind of owe it to DC and ‘Batman’ in a way because it brought my family here into the business,” Tan told TheWrap

“Deadpool 2” star Lewis Tan, who plays Shatterstar in the raunchy superhero sequel, dropped by TheWrap studios to talk about his character’s ’90s look and his family’s connection to Tim Burton’s “Batman.” Watch the video above.

“It’s funny that his costume is still very 90s looking but he also has a modern look with the leather jacket,” Tan told TheWrap. “I love the costume and I think it’s awesome.”

Tan’s father, Philip Tan, is a legendary martial artist, actor, and stunt performer who appeared in Tim Burton’s 1989 “Batman.” In the film, Philip Tan plays one of the Joker’s goons who goes mano a mano against Michael Keaton’s Batman and is quickly disarmed by a kick.

“I kind of owe it to DC and ‘Batman’ in a way because it brought my family here into the business,” said the younger Tan. “They gave my father a huge start. He was national champion of gymnastics and taekwondo in England. He got one of his first starts on ‘Batman.’ He was the fight choreographer and did a lot of crazy stunts.”

Tan added, “[He was] the goon that flips over the fence, lands with the swords, and pulls them out.”

“Now it comes full circle because I’m doing the same type of thing.”

Tan also appears in the third season of AMC’s “Into the Badlands” as Gaius Chau. “His backstory ties all the current ‘Badlands’ characters,” said Tan.

“Deadpool 2” opens in theaters on May 18.
