Lifetime Puts Gena McCarthy in Charge of Reality Shows

Network makes former Discovery exec senior vice president of reality and alternative programming

Lifetime network has tapped Gena McCarthy to be senior vice president of reality and alternative programming. In her new job, McCarthy will be directing the strategy and production of all lifetime's unscripted content.

McCarthy was previously senior vice president of development and production at the Discovery Channel where she supervised primetime serials and specials. She has been working in the TV industry since 1993 and her resume includes stints at TLC and WE-tv in addition to her work at Discovery.

McCarthy will report to JoAnn Alfano, Lifetime's executive vice president for entertainment. Alfano made the announcement on Tuesday saying, "We are thrilled Gena is joining the Lifetime team… Gena’s long track record of building successful reality franchises in the cable industry is extraordinary, and we look forward to her spearheading our long term unscripted strategy and growth.”

Sounds like Lifetime is making a push to become a bigger player in the cable reality scene. McCarthy begins her new gig on Jul. 6.
