“I did everything I possibly could to somehow be strong enough to overcome having no ACL, but the reality has sunk in that my knee is just too unstable to compete at this level,” Vonn said.

The skier has suffered a number of physical setbacks in the past year. In February, Vonn experienced a crash that left her with a fractured tibia, along with a torn anterior cruciate ligament( ACL)  and  medial collateral ligament (MCL). Though she managed to begin training again well ahead of schedule, Vonn encountered another setback during training in November when she fell again, causing a partial tear to the same ACL. Later, in competition, her knee gave out.
