Based on the new trailer for "The Lone Ranger," Johnny Depp has racked up yet another entry on his long list of eccentric characters.
The man behind the effete vampire in "Dark Shadows," the outlandish Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean" and whatever it was he was going for in "The Rum Diary," is back as Tonto, a Native American with some distinctive face paint. He's also got a habit of talking to horses and erecting sick beds on the top of extremely tall rock formations.
There are train crashes, menacing pocket watch sounds and ambushes aplenty in the new commercial, which helps fill in some of the Lone Ranger's (Armie Hammer) backstory. In a nutshell, some bad stuff happened and he's now "a spirit walker" who must wear a mask and turn to vigilantism. All of which is an entirely natural response to trauma.
Produced at a reported cost of $250 million to produce, "The Lone Ranger" rides into theaters on July 3, 2013.
"There's something very wrong with that horse," Depp says at one point in the trailer. Because Silver is the one who is a little bit out there?
