While moviegoers anxiously await the return of Harrison Ford to the “Star Wars” franchise, the 72-year-old actor could also be returning to another former iconic role.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that an “Indiana Jones” sequel is on the horizon and that another movie “will one day be made inside this company,” she told Vanity Fair.
“When it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it,” Kennedy went on to say.
There has been speculation about the return of the fedora-wearing professor of archaeology since Disney and Paramount brokered a financial deal for “future films” back in 2012; Kennedy’s statement, however, is considered to be the first official announcement.
Before becoming president of Lucasfilm and the brand manager of the “Star Wars” franchise after Disney acquired the company for over $4 billion in October 2012, Kennedy worked closely with Steven Spielberg as an associate or executive producer on many of his projects including “E.T.,” “Jurassic Park,” “Raiders of the Lost Arc” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”
“Raiders of the Lost Arc” was released in 1981 and has since spawned three sequels — all starring Ford — with the fourth film, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” hitting theaters in 2008.
It has not been confirmed wether Ford will return to the role.
