Spotify Names Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Its Most-Streamed Artist in 2013

Rihanna is the most-streamed female artist for second year in a row

After 4.5 billion total hours of music streaming by its 24 million global users, Spotify named Macklemore & Ryan Lewis its most-streamed artist in 2013.

The duo’s track, “Can’t Hold Us,” was tops globally, with “Thrift Shop” third in the world. The latter is also the most-streamed song of the last five years, with over 160 million streams to date, according to the digital music service.

Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” which received the most streams in a single day, (April 20th) came in fourth.

In the United States, Drake actually topped the Mackemore & Ryan Lewis as the nation’s most-streamed artist, with Imagine Dragons claiming both top track (“Radioactive”) and album.

But the world is bigger than us, Americans.

On the success of his clients online, Zach Quillen, manager of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, said: “Spotify has proven to be a powerful platform for both sharing and experiencing music. We value its ability to reach new, curious listeners by encouraging the sort of word-of-mouth marketing that drove ‘The Heist’ from day one.”

Steve Savoca, head of Content at Spotify, commented: “Congratulations to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis who achieved incredible success in 2013, and to Rihanna who is again crowned the Queen of Pop. It’s also amazing to see young artists like Lorde, becoming sensations almost overnight, She’s a truly thrilling discovery for Spotify users and will help to re-shape the pop music landscape.”
