‘Man of Steel,’ ‘Monsters University’ Added to L.A. Film Fest Lineup

Two likely blockbusters join previously announced lineup of indie films; Spike Jonze, costume design programs also added

The Los Angeles Film Festival has added screenings of Zack Snyder‘s “Man of Steel” and Pixar’s “Monsters University” to its 2013 lineup, supplementing the previously-announced lineup of indie films with a couple of likely Hollywood blockbusters.

“Monsters University,” the sequel to the 2001 film “Monsters Inc.,” will screen on June 18 as part of the official festival lineup. “Man of Steel,” Snyder’s reboot of the “Superman” franchise, will take place on June 12 and is being billed as a pre-Festival screening. It takes place two days before the release of the film by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.

Monsters UniversityThe L.A. Film Festival has always mixed a handful of high-profile Hollywood movies into its lineup, though it sometimes seems to keep those films at an arm's length. When the festival hosted the premiere of "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," festival artistic director David Ansen half-jokingly described it as being "festival-adjacent."

LAFF also added three additional programs, including a June 22 discussion with director Spike Jonze titled "A Brand of His Own: Being Spike Jonze." Jonze will discuss his career and also show clips from his next film, "Her."

"The Iconic Moment," a program that will be presented on June 20, is a tribute to costume designers, timed to celebrate the creation of a separate Costume Designers Branch by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The event will be curated by costume designer Sophie de Rakoff and will include a panel discussion with costume designers, followed by a reception and exhibit.

On the afternoon of June 22, the festival will also present a program deved to female editors and titled “Women in the Cut: A Celebration of Women Editors.”  Mary Sweeney will host and moderate a panel that will include Sandra Adair ("Before Midnight," "Bernie"), Maryann Brandon ("Star Trek," "Star Wars: Episode VII," "Super 8"), Pamela Martin ("Hitchcock," "Ruby Sparks," "The Fighter") and Kim Roberts ("Waiting For Superman," "Food, Inc.").

"Each year the Festival continues the year round work of Film Independent by producing high profile, curated events – conversations, master classes and performances – bringing together artist and craftspeople who make the magic happen,” said festival director Stephanie Allain in a press release announcing the program additions.

“It’s an honor this year to honor women editors, listen to legendary costume designers discuss their favorite iconic moment in film and then watch Vertigo outdoors at the Academy Lab.  As always, alongside our lineup of amazing films, we have an equally stellar list of programmed events that are open to the public, from Maya to Mamet, Spike to Santaolalla.  We're taking you behind the scenes with the masters."

The 2013 Los Angeles Film Festival, which is produced by Film Independent, will run from June 13 to June 23 at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles. It will open with Pedro Almodovar's "I'm So Excited" and close with Nat Faxon's and Jim Rash's "The Way, Way Back," and will feature David O. Russell as guest director.
