Before “Sharnado” star Ian Ziering” was interviewed, “Today” show screened the duo’s cameo on the SyFy schlock sequel that debuts July 30 at 9 p.m. ET.

In clip, the pair report on the movie’s apocalyptic “EF5 Sharknado” with the same seriousness that they use to report on real hurricanes and tornadoes. Lauer even, very seriously, asks Roker what conditions are creating this once-in-a-lifetime Sharknado situation.

Ziering said “they crushed it” in their roles, but also knows how campy this role, which is bringing him and has-beens like Tara Reid some newfound fame.

“You know what to expect. It’s sharks and tornadoes. It’s a similar formula but a different experience.” He also knows, though, that to play it as camp would be the wrong acting choice. “We get the joke but you can’t let on because if you let the wind out of the sails then it ruins the experience for whoever’s watching it. So we’re very sure to stay in character.”
