Matthew Lillard’s ‘Fat Kid Rules the World’ Wins at SXSW

“Brooklyn Castle” and Paul Simon documentary “Under African Skies” join Matthew Lillard’s directorial debut in winning SXSW audience prizes

Matthew Lillard's "Fat Kid Rules the World" and Joe Berlinger's Paul Simon documentary "Under African Skies" are among the additional audience award winners at the South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival, which announced the top films in seven categories on Saturday.

Based on the young adult novel by K.L. Going, it concerns an overweight teen (Jacob Wysocki, left) drawn into the world of punk rock.

"Brooklyn Castle," Katie Dellamaggiore's look at the members of a junior high school chess team in New York, won in the Documentary Spotlight category.

"Under African Skies" (below) topped the 24 Beats Per Second section, which was composed of music-themed films. In it, recent Oscar nominee Berlinger ("Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory") follows Paul Simon as the musician returns to South Africa on the anniversary of his acclaimed but controversial album "Graceland."

Under African SkiesOther winners include "Low & Clear," which deals with two old friends who reunite for one last fly-fishing trip (Emerging Visions); "Citadel," about an agoraphobic man who teams up with a vigilante priest to ward off a young gang intent on taking his infant daughter (Midnighters); "Her Master's Voice," which follows a ventriloquist who uses puppets to deal with the deaths of those close to her (SXGlobal); and "Chasing Ice," a chronicle of photographer James Balog's research into climate change, and his time-lapse photography of vanishing glaciers (Festival Favorites).

Two audience award winners, as well as all the SXSW jury awards, were announced on Tuesday. The Headliner Audience Award will be announced on Monday.
