Fox News’ Roger Ailes Offered Condoleeza Rice ‘Off-the-Record’ Help

Fox News says Ailes "speaks to powerful people from the left and the right all the time"

Fox News head Roger Ailes offered "off-the-record" help to President George W. Bush's secretary of state, Condoleeza Rice, in a 2005 letter obtained by Gawker, a Fox spokeswoman acknowledged to TheWrap.

Getty ImagesIn the handwritten note, Ailes praised Rice and said he was just a phone call away. Gawker's John Cook obtained it through a Freedom of Information Act request and presented it as evidence of conservative bias at Fox News despite its "fair and balanced" slogan.

"Great first month," wrote Ailes, who recently re-upped his contract as Fox News chief. "You handled hearing beautifully. If I can be of help off the record — just call."

A Fox News spokeswoman told TheWrap that Bush officials never took Ailes up on the offer and said in a statement to Gawker that he "speaks to powerful people from the left and the right all the time."

The network did not immediately respond to a question from TheWrap about whether Ailes has offered help to any members of Democratic administrations.

"Mr. Ailes provided no assistance whatsoever and there was no mention of the Bush administration," Fox News said in its statement. "Secretary Rice never took him up on the offer, which was a personal media-related one. As the head of a news organization, Roger speaks to powerful people from the left and the right all the time — if every other news chief wants to release their off the record correspondence and conversations, Roger will too."

Rice responded to Ailes with a thank-you letter, in which she crossed out her aide's generic "Mr. Ailes" address and hand-wrote "Roger" in its place.

Despite its "fair and balanced" motto, Fox has frequently been accused of having strong conservative leanings. Ailes, who helped found the channel, once served as an aide to Republican President Richard Nixon.

Cook, who often covers politics and political media for Gawker, previously uncovered a memo in the Nixon library showing that Ailes and the president planned to "put the GOP on TV news."

In his report on the letter, Cook noted the vagueness of the term "personal media-related" and pondered how Fox would cover a New York Times editor offering help to the Obama administration.

"I'm quite positive there are similar notes of encouragement from Ailes in the files of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric Holder, both of whom are surely finding Fox News' coverage to be quite 'helpful' right now," Cook wrote with more than a little sarcasm. "It goes without saying, but: Please just imagine for a moment how Fox News would cover the publication of a private note from the editor of the New York Times to an Obama Administration official offering 'help off the record.'"

Must be giving people what they want to see. #1 across the boards. In all news services…CABLE news.

    • Charles Freeman

I guess that's why drug dealers are so popular too; they “must be giving people what they want to [use].”

      • bluestormrising

Those Drug dealers are beating a path to your door, Charlie. Just relax…you can fill that crack pipe soon.

        • BenghaziVs1983BeirutBombings

Really, really deep cynicism, redstormofignorancerising! If Charles is supposedly puffing on a crack pipe (which is the ultimate insult coming from you), then you're permanently mentally locked in a “brain-freeze cocktail” of PCP, LSD and meth-ampetamines! What an elitist jack-off thing to suggest to Charles, but we expect that from lock-step Far Right deadheads!

          • bluestormrising

You know all about this drug stuff don't you? Better in lockstep with the Far Right than “goose steeping” with the leftwing kooks.

    • ferndoc

      Yes, people want the truth!

  • America47000

Hm. Some of these sentences seem incomplete.

    Like this one:
“Despite its “fair and balanced” motto, Fox has frequently been accused of having strong conservative leanings.”

    It should be

Fox has frequently been accused of having strong conservative leanings by those with strong left-wing leanings who aren't interested in having their views challenged.

    There, much better.

    Otherwise, yawn.

The New York Times helps Obama on the record. That's kind of their thing now.

    • http://twitter.com/MoplopJC Screen Clutter

You should probably attempt a comment on the substance of the post. It indicates that a news network head offered off-the-record assistance to an administration official. Does that evoke any feelings for you?

      • Mix100

Aurelian Fossil, you are absolutely correct.

Sinister serious stuff. Bravo to Gawker.

      • Bill S

Any comment on NBC, ABC, CNN, CBS, MSNBC, New York Times COVERING UP the complete dereliction of duty by the President regarding the protection and AVAILABLE rescue of our Ambassador in Libya? While SEALS were screaming for help that never came?

        • http://twitter.com/MoplopJC Screen Clutter

Show me where SEALS were screaming for help. I can't find it on Google News or Lexis-Nexis. I appreciate your help.

          • America47000

It's all over Google, or are you just ignoring the sites posting it as unreliable to you? What's your proof that they are unreliable? Probably their reporting of stories the president doesn't want reported. That's the whole point of the “covering up” post.

Then there's the blatant censorship about it, such as Facebook taking down posts from SEALs saying help was denied.

          • FilmPunk

Maybe you didn't do a google search. Try “CIA operators were denied request for help during Benghazi attack” The facts are already out there. The sad thing is only Fox and a number online websites are covering it. NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC will not cover the story because it hurts the president.

      • ferndoc

No, PMSNBC tries to help the liberal left and Obama all the time . Good thing PMSNBC doesn't have much of an audience!

Evidence? Or just unamusing nicknames for cable networks?

          • America47000

The White House hosts conference calls exclusively with MSNBC hosts all the time. Chris Matthews after the first debate screamed into the camera that Obama should tune to MSNBC for his talking points before the next debate. Routine segment bookings involving a left-wing host and two left-wing guests. Obama and MSNBC using the same Forward motif in their mottos. It's self-evident just watching the network for five minutes.

          • America47000

Yes, because Faux News is so clever.

Actually, all I see is name-calling against Fox News. Nothing to suggest anyone saying these things has actually watched it. It's ridiculous and sad. Typical left-wing debate tactics: ignore facts, use insults and demonize

          • MyTooSenseLA

FYI I watch Fox News — and on occasion listen to Patriot Radio (whatever that is on Sirius) — as a) they're kind of funny, it's so off the wall; and b) it's interesting to hear what the hard-right has to say. Funny, weird, enraging, off-the-wall and very often depressing. But I listen.

          • BenghaziVs1983Beirut

You deserve a medal for testing your sanity watching Fux News and listening to Patriot Radio — I'd need a labotomy!

At least they're owned by Americans. Not the Commie wife of an Aussie whose largest share holder is a Saudi Shiek. You idiots are all brainwashed into hating your own government to the point of being traitors to a foreign entity who controls our media!

          • America47000

We don't hate the government. Just the thieves who run it and the idiots like you who insist on electing them in the name of “fairness.”

And why would you be against muslims, commies and foreigners since that's who you put in the White House.

That's what's called a joke. Kind of like your political beliefs.

          • FilmPunk

You can't look at reality. George Soros has been funding the progressive liberal media for years and you have the audacity to call people who watch fox news traitors? Media Matters is the biggest lying sack of crap on the planet and you think their motives are pure. You live in upside down world.

      • America47000

No, it shows me someone who happens to be in charge of a business offered general help to a friend. It's no different than saying “if you ever need anything, let me know.” You make it out like it's some sort of blank check to cover up a story or something, and it's just complete BS. If anything it's probably more like saying that they'd be willing to see about giving her interview time on their shows if a need arose. Of course, they offer almost everyone in Washington the same thing, usually much more formally.

My comment on the substance of the post is that the post has no real substance. It's more smoke and mirrors.

The only feelings evoked for me relate to how stupid we have gotten as a populace. That this happens to correspond with Democrats finding it easier to get elected is no coincidence.

      • FilmPunk

no it doesn't because ailes worked in the white house for a republican president. Does he have to close that portion of his life because he works for a news outlet? Let's ask George Stephanopoulos what he thinks.

        • EquatingAilesMuckRaking?

Big difference, George Stephanopoulos is NOT the President of news division like Roger Goebbels is at Faux News and he certainly is NOT a Far Right Degenerate Muck-Raking Fascista like Ailes and Citizen Murdoch are! Go find a logical argument, FilmSquirt.

    • MyTooSenseLA

America47000, you — and millions like you — chose to accept it as “news,” when any reasonable observer would clearly recognize it as 24-hour political commentary. By design, that's what it's intended to be. Fair enough. But it's dismaying that so many in this country — those who should be asking hard questions, whose future is at stake — unquestioningly accept it as serious news-gathering. Of course, all news has SOME bias, it's reported by imperfect, fallible human beings, but Fox isn't even really pretending to be news. It's a degradation of language to call it “news”…but feel free to watch it, and feel informed.

      • America47000

Quite frankly, you have no idea what you are talking about. You can't say it's “24-hour political commentary” when Shepherd Smith controls 2 hours, and even that ridiculous Rolling Stone hit piece Matt Taibbi did (which I suspect is where you got your marching orders, either directly or indrectly, but I wouldn't want to assume) said that they didn't see Shep as biased. So that's just the tip of where your observations fall apart. You have no idea about what Fox News does, either because you don't watch it or when you watch it you see what you want to see. That's a shame.

On top of that, not to grant you your point, but being biased is not the same as being wrong.

If you honestly believe Fox News is wrong, you would do the country a great service by declining to vote.

Seriously, the only 24-hour political commentary network is MSNBC. They don't even have shows they present as hard news.

        • MyTooSenseLA

Kinda silly to respond, but I will: Never read the Matt Taibbi piece, I don't ‘take my marching’ orders from anyone, needless to say; have only the vaguest sense of who Shepherd Smith is, but let's assume he's a great newsman & anchor, that only leaves a mere 22 hours a day for propaganda masquerading as news; I don't watch much of MSNBC either, but I gather, YES, it is a clear left-wing alternative to Fox, so you can expect pretty much political commentary, it doesn't pass for news either. No argument there. But it would be refreshing if Fox “news” stopped pretending to be a news-gathering organization when that's really not its business model. Political commentary is fine, just call it what it is.

Further, this is a rather unintelligible statement: “If you honestly believe Fox News is wrong, you would do the country a great service by declining to vote.” I think — know — Fox is wrong if they're in the same camp that thinks that cutting the marginal tax rate by an addt'l 20% — 20% LESS than the Bush-era tax cuts — funding it, and an addt'l $2 trillion in defense spending, with completely murky (unexplained & unspecified) elimination of unknown deductions — when by virtually every measure, when every cogent, non-partisan economic study says it's simply NOT do-able, that it will either explode the deficit or reduce essential gov't — yes, government — spending drastically for, say, education, infrastructure & technology. If that's what Fox News stands for, well, then, yes, of course they're wrong. It's all dead wrong. Funny, somehow Bill Clinton ran BIG surpluses when the highest marginal tax rate was, I believe, 39%. What happened to all that? Btw, have you noticed, ALL of Mitt's economic advisers — ALL of them — were on Bush 43's Council of Economic Advisers? The same brain trust that brought you the Great Recession? Think I'll stick with the team that is helping to dig us out of that bottomless hole. Sorry if the recovery isn't “fast enough” to suit you — maybe you can ask George W. Bush why that is…as he's the one who squandered four years of surpluses.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, but I'll be voting, as will, I hope, 100's of millions of like-minded people. Those who still appreciate the old-fashioned newsy news.

Live and be well. And vote, even if it's the wrong vote.

          • FilmPunk

Let see if I can address your eloquently crafted retorts.

First, who do you think is better at growing the economy? Government or individuals? If you believe in government then Obama is your man. Remember, it's not the Governments money it's the people's money and the people should never be burdened with running a miss-managed, over-spending bloated bureaucracy. Don't buy into the notion that trickle down government is better than giving the people back more of their money.

Secondly, by most economist standards, the recovery that Clinton likes to take credit for began about nine months before he took office. His surplus was not his doing but the result of the government paying off the savings and loan bailout. That's where the surplus came from. Don't think that Clinton had anything to do with it.

Thirdly, it was Clinton and his “American Dream- EVERYONE DESERVES A HOUSE” plan that got us into this crisis. Clinton is a great politician but a his policies cost this country dearly.

Fourthly, it was Reagan who unraveled the years of stagflation and got the economy rolling. Under Carter the top marginal tax rate was 70%. Investment into the economy was not happening until reagan cut the rate to 28%.

every policy Obama has enacted as prolonged the pain and you think he's the right guy for the job. The recovery isn't fast enough because we have a president that has never help a job. Obama knows nothing about creating jobs and he has surrounded himself with people who know nothing about creating jobs. I'd rather get someone in the White House that knows about investment and creating jobs rather than a president that believes redistributing wealth is a good idea.

Obama didn't get us in the this mess but he has clearly kept in it.

          • MyTooSenseLA

Unfortunately, little of what you write makes sense: the Clinton surpluses came in the LAST four years of his presidency, so he certainly take full credit for the surpluses. (Note to self: Clinton served eight years as president.)

This b.s. about Mitt the Businessman “understanding” job creation, so utterly hollow: His predecessor, George W., another Harvard MBA. Big oil, big business. A lot of good it did him, and us. He led us into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. And President Obama, yeah the guy who “never held a job” — I guess constitutional law professor, editor of the Harvard Law review, US Senator, and United States President for four years is a pretty piss-poor resume — has in fact created 5+ million new jobs. Clearly the economy is on the path to recovery. And yet — and yet — the best Romney can offer is the exact same prescription for disaster that Geo. W. Bush gave us: I mean the SAME GROUP OF GUYS, THE SAME BRAIN TRUST! Go read Romney's position papers! The simple truth is: eight years of Bush, created a HUGE financial disaster, and now the GOP is up in arms — up in arms! — well, gee guys, why isn't this a better recovery? Bush had eight years to drive it into the ground, give us eight years to fix it.

And, for the record, Pres. Reagan — the addled actor — raised taxes — what? — eight times? I went to college with Grover Norquist, he was a joke back then. Now he's a menace.

Happy election day. It appears, just maybe, America is getting the message: Mr. Romney is an empty suit.

          • FilmPunk

did you just write that Obama can claim editor of the harvard law review as a paid job? he's never worked a day in the private sector. he's a community organizer who believes in redistribution of wealth- his words not mine. So ignore facts and bring up bush- come on you can do better than that.

Romney started a company and that company had employees, that company became successful. That company started other companies and invested in many many more. So you think Obama is better qualified to manage the economy? Tell me what he's done in his first term to create jobs? His stimulus didn't work, his shovel ready jobs weren't so shovel ready. He did pass a large health care bill that creates the largest tax increase in recent memory. Companies are refusing to hire because of his policies but you think this guy is better at creating jobs. you're blind to the truth.

Last part you cheese plug- Total direct costs attributable to the closing of insolvent thrift institutions from 1986-1995 amounted to $145. 7 billion. This info is from FDIC.gov. It was in the second term of Clinton's presidency that he suddenly balanced the budget. We no longer had to book the cost of the savings and loan bail out. He had found money. Also remember, Clinton had been rebuked by the american people with a mid term election that gave the spending control of the federal government over to a Republican congress.

Obama has not even submitted a budget while in office. He's not done is duty as president. He has issued plenty of executive orders but he's not submitted or had a budget passed. I don't care what you think of Romney, all I know is anyone is better than Obama and I would never call Romney and empty suit when talking about Obama and his teleprompter speeches. He's a socialist that has done more to destroy the constitution than any president sense FDR.

You really need to know your facts. The debt paid by the FDIC and according their final accounting available at FDIC.gov, the payment ended in 1995. that was the second year of Clinton and to that, the total out of pocket to the American people was $145.7 Billion. that was found money that was already budget for that didn't have to be used. Add that to the fact that Clinton had just received the most stinging rebuke during the election that he moved to the center. The purse strings were given to the Republican congress.

Obama has yet to pass a budget. He's ignored his job yet you think he's a strong leader. keep in mind, 5 million jobs is pathetic, we're on our path to destruction and he's driving faster. If clinton can take credit for balancing the budget then Obama should take credit for his policies.

Last thing- Reagan dropped the top marginal tax rate from over 70% to 28% an reduced the capital gains tax to 14%. I'm glad you went to school with Grover Norquist, I serve on a board with one of Reagan under-secretaries that was responsible for getting government off the backs of businesses. I've had more first conversations about the policies of reagan than you can imagine. Hear, hear, MyTwoSenseLA, on CORRECTLY sourcing/attributing how the federal SURPLUSES came in during the Clinton Administration. Keep up the good fight (with LOGIC and FACT), MyTwoSenseLA, but keep in mind that trying to bring in coherent, factual points with Far Right Repugnant supporters is like trying to talk a schizophrenic off a tall building's ledge — they just don't want to hear it and will continue to go off on nonsensical, illogical rat's maze of futility!

The one thing that Repugnants don't want to come to grips with is that “Fiscal Conservatism” is a FALLACY foisted upon the public — when Reagan and Bush Sr. and Jr. were each RECORD DEFICIT SPENDERS due to BLOATED, UNCHECKED defense budgets and two concurrent wars (particularly under the Bush Jr./Cheney “scorched earth” regime!). Keep up the good fight, my brother, TwoTwoSenseLA!!!

Sounds good, and good luck! You know I could kick myself too for trying to talk logic with some of these Far Right blinder-wearers! They're stuck on things like Benghazi and Rumney's LAME, amateurish and cheap-shot grandstanding when it comes to PARSING whether the President said it was an “act of terror,” when he clearly did! And even the CIA reported today a timeline events which included emphatically stating there were NO “stand-down orders” from higher-ups and the Obama Administration.

Yet, these Far Righters are latching onto Benhazi like flees on FECES while they have NO explanation why their beloved Ronald Reagan NEVER sought justice for the 241 U.S. servicemen who died in the 1983 Beirut terrorist truck bombings!!! It's okay for them when a sitting Repugnant president ENTIRELY FAILS on his Constitutional mandate to carry out the LAWS of this country and to seek JUSTICE!

Like you aptly said, it is like PISSING IN THE WIND trying to propose LOGICAL ARGUMENTS and historical fact (NOT their revisionism) to Far Right dead-headers, so I guess I'm resigned to just being a THORN in their sides by continuing to respond to their inane illogical revisionism. I have to admit it does bring me some small satisfaction — so I'm guilty and wiping piss from my face on occasion! ;-D

Also…it would be refreshing to dispense with this stupid myth that somehow Democrats worship at the alter of Big Bad Government. Most Americans, just like you, er, FilmPunk, believe in Hard Work, Personal Initiative, Making it on Their Own, a Day's Work for a Day's Pay. It's. just. such. bullshit. to think the hard right somehow has a monopoly on these virtues. In a nutshell — and how stupid to be debating this on The Wrap — we ALSO believe in looking out for the little guy, helping out others who are less fortunate, um, education, teachers, public libraries, great public education. Things Big Bidness just don't give a shit about. There ain't no profit in it.

Get off your soapbox. We believe in what YOU believe, we ALSO believe there is a responsible role for government. Sadly, truthfully, the Republican party proudly believes in NONE of that.

          • FilmPunk

we might find some common ground yet. Here's where I lose you. The people running the democratic party are the far left and the far left are the ones creating the “Class warfare” issues. The government needs to shrink or we will be bankrupt like spain and the rest of europe.

But to your point. Every year the New York Library holds fundraiser galas and who do you think gives money to that fundraiser? Rich people and rich business. Have you ever seen PBS, at the end of the shows it tells what corporation supported it. Go to any college campus and look at the buildings and see the names on them. These buildings were all gifts from very wealthy individuals. We have plenty of libraries and we spend more money on education than any country in the world yet our schools suck! It's not the money, it's the bureaucracy. You don't give a hand to the little guy taking money from the wealthy, you do it by creating an environment where businesses can grow and individuals can be responsible for themselves. Don't buy into the lie that all business are bad and rich people owe everyone else.

Being as you are now into the “politics” of new's reporting. Breathlessly awaiting to hear all about prevailing liberal bias mainstream media mouthpieces ABC, CBS, NBC MSNBC &CNN. Welcome to toss-in New York and LA Times of you run short of copy.

Gawker has lit up the Obama administration, especially on TARP, Geithner and the drone war. Reporters can only use the documents that are provided to them by sources or FOIA. If there is something from the NYT, LA Times in a similar vein and available, it will come up. Perhaps the Wall Street Journal or New York Post could do something similar to Cook's tactic.

    • ann2609

Thank you Stuart. For the record Ailes has said publicly that his base news reporting during the day is just that, with the usual left right debates thrown in. However he admits to paying a very nice sum to the likes of Hannity & Huckabee to be the conservative voices at Fox News. So WRAP & Gawker, at least he came out about it. Unlike these so called MSM networks that are basically complicate in the Libya coverup and anything to help Obama. Thank god for FN for it's great reporters continually digging up more info proving more lies coming out of the Obama administrations handling of this disaster.

Nice article. So Roger Ailes has decided to help a fellow republican. The left get help from news sources all the time. There was nothing wrong or even inappropriate about his note. If you're going to get serious about political news reporting then you've got to get beyond your anger over Fox and report the news. The truth is the media has ignored Obama's role in Benghazi and the White House is now in a full fledged cover up. I would love to see a story on that- oh wait, maybe on a story on the other media not covering that story. Not since Watergate has there been a coverup this larger yet you're concerned with a note a that former White House staff member wrote to a member of his party. You always have a choice to be a shill or a reporter.

    • tim.molloy

We've reported numerous stories on the evolving Benghazi explanation. They're in our archives. Enjoy.

      • FarRightTrojanHorses

Mr. Molloy, you should NOT have to defend yourselves at TheWrap for doing your fully vetted, OBJECTIVE stories on how the media is covering the Benghazi and how the Far Right cheap-shot-artists from the Repugnant Rumney/Ryan Express are seeking to twist and REVISE what happened that tragic night in Benghazi.

In fact, the CIA just released a DETAILED report (http://news.yahoo.com/detailed-account-benghazi-attack-notes-cias-quick-response-020906681–abc-news-politics.html) on how NO ONE in the Obama Administration issued “Stand-Down Orders” as the Repugnant/Far Right wing nuts have been claiming in their own very little REVISIONIST minds.

I say, “Remember the 1983 Beirut, Lebanon TRUCK BOMBING that KILLED around 241 U.S./American peace-keeping troops during the Reagan Administration!

Reagan did NOTHING to push for the CIA and U.S. military to investigate, conduct a manhunt and seek JUSTICE (possibly military retribution too) against the TERRORISTS behind that attack! But the Far Right Wing-Nuts out there yesterday and today are okay when a sitting Repugnant President massively FAILS in seeking justice and protecting American LIVES overseas — they're all Trojan Horse Hypocrites and Revisionists of the worst kind!

      • FilmPunk

I look for those hard hitting articles but all i could find is your concern over Sarah Palin using the term, “shuck and jive'. I left you a comment on that one. Please direct me to an article where you call the president out for lying to the American people. How about an article that gives the time-line of events. You could even write on the ever evolving story coming from the jay carney. Nope, you're more concerned with throwing any conservative under the bus you can. No matter how stupid the claim you'll cover it if makes a republican look bad. Why not be on the said of truth? The truth has no agenda and doesn't take sides.

the reason you don't Roger Ailes is because he's conservative. The same reason you don't like Palin and now Eastwood. Who cares that Ailes will help Rice- why not write a story on who told Ambassador Susan Rice to lie about the attack in Benghazi? About some facts on issues that matter, we will all be happier deciding for ourselves.

Hey, FilmPunk, what about your beloved Father of Far Right Wing Nuttery, Ronald Reagan, promising “justice” for the 241 American servicemen slaughtered in the truck-bombing at Beirut, Lebanon back in October 1983?? Damn, he and his other Repugnant successors (including Bush Sr. and Jr.) NEVER did anything to seek out those Beirut truck-bombing terrorists, right??!!!

You're all AMATEUR provocateurs (like The Rumney/Ryan Express) in playing FAST-AND-LOOSE with your revisionist contentions on Benghazi, where four Americans died. The CIA just released a report this morning detailing the timelines and said NO orders to “stand down” came from above or from within the Obama Administration. Face it, you are Far Right Trojan Horses who are the ultimate hypocrites, revisionists and Paper Tiger Neo-Con, Faux Hawks. Jokes!

It's sad that every time the discussion turns to the ineptitude of the Obama administration you left wingers always change the subject to something from years ago. Does your point have any bearing on how Obama handled this disaster? Obama is president not bush and not reagan. If reagan or bush had bee president our Ambassador would not have been allowed in the area. So if you want to go back in time we can bring up Iranian hostages and carter's weakness as president. Face it, Obama screwed this up and you just can't bring yourself to admit it.

  • MyTooSenseLA

It's not news, it doesn't even pretend to be news. The “fair and balanced” logo is mordantly funny in a Kafka-esque 21st century way — where words no longer have meaning. They have absolutely NO interest in being ‘fair and balanced,’ that's not even close to their mission, or their audience. It's a 24-hour polemic…

It's arguable how much CNN really is “news,” closer to info-tainment, but at least they ATTEMPT to present two sides to a story. They go through the motions. And while I know the not-so-loyal opposition views the NY Times as, God helps us, a “commie pinko” rag (and how we're back to the terminology of the Cold War is a mystery), and while they are a liberal newspaper, they're also about the last newspaper standing that tries hard to be a “newspaper of record.”

Anyway, it's kind of offensive that Fox News can refer to itself as a news-gathering organization with a straight face. But their vast viewership has only themselves to blame that they accept it AS news. The fault is not in our stars, it's in ourselves.

    • FauxNewsFascistaAgenda

      Amen, my brother MyTooSenseLA!!

I think you pretty much fairly sized up the general insipidness of Mainstream Media, but Faux News Channel and its chief, Roger Goebbels, are purely going for the Far Right Fascista slant of their News Corp. hacking chief, Citizen Rupe Murdoch! It's an insidious and criminal agenda/marriage (at least in view of the widespread “electronic hacking” of phones, voice-mails and computer mainframes both in the U.S. and U.K.) that lies at the core of Citizen Rupe's and Roger Goebbel's Far Right Wingnut Agenda — all dedicated to backing the Rumney/Ryan Express fascista ticket and New Corp's monopolistic/hacking agenda! Keep spreading the good word, brother!

      • MyTooSenseLA

You said it better than I did! Love it: Faux News and Roger Goebbels. Sadly, too close to the truth. We live in Very Strange Times indeed. (Funny, I think I was trying to be, um, ‘fair and balanced'…)

        • LimitsToNewsCriminality?

Yeah, I would say you were probably more “fair and balanced” than I was in my description of the Citizen Rupe-Roger Goebbels Fascista Agenda. I might get a little carried away, but it's probably because I am genuinely REPULSED by the depth, scale and shear breadth of Citizen Murdoch/News Corp's level of CRIMINAL, anti-competitive and monopolistic business practices.

Somewhere, in one of the many countries where News Corp wraps its nefarious tentacles, there has to be at least ONE country (pray tell the U.K. or U.S., maybe?) that stands for the “RULE OF LAW” and finally lays down LEGAL sanctions and punishment for the widespread forms of “ELECTRONIC HACKING” conducted by News Corp under Citizen Rupe's watch (including computer hacking into “couponing” competitors in the U.S. that News Corp. America ended up BUYING OUT for their silence!). News Corp. has literally spent HUNDRED$ OF MILLION$ OF DOLLAR$ to buy companies’ and people's silence in “payoff settlements.”

The fact that News Corp. affiliates and subsidiaries (it's always the “underlings who failed us,” according to Citizen Rupe!) conducted such a widespread, systemic pattern of electronic hacking/eavesdropping activities, it would have made Richard Nixon and The Watergate Plumbers look like small-time petty criminals or maybe even Boy Scouts by comparison. Never have I seen ONE publicly-traded corporation get away with such widespread CRIMINALITY on such a global scale!

Well, at least the British government (can't recall if it was the House of Commons or House of Lords) who issue the symbolic findings and resolution that Citizen Rupert Murdoch is “UNFIT” to run a publicly -traded company! And that's really putting it mildly and still letting him off the hook for condoning and ENCOURAGING such criminality of a scale we've never seen before. Even William Randolph Hearst looks like a “petty thief” compared to Citizen Rupe.

Okay, I'm off my soap box for now! ;-D

          • FilmPunk

let me ask you, what ideology has limited the press? Is it free market conservatives or socialists? Was it capitalist or communists? When you compare Fox News to Nazi germany to you ever think that Fox news doesn't promote socialism, communism or the restriction of the press? Obama does and even requires stories be submitted before published. Obama has done more to control the press than any president since Nixon. Even the NY Times called them out on it but I guess it's okay when you believe the end justifies the means.

          • EquatingCitizenRupe&Obama?

Hey, FilmSquirt, I NEVER equated a politician's alleged control of the media (as you suggest with Obama), but instead solely FOCUSED on how News Corp./Fox hacker-in-residence Rupert Murdoch is being INVESTIGATED by both the British and American government's for known forms of ELECTRONIC HACKING! The fact is Citizen Rupe has been able to waltz into No. 10 Downing Street or the Oval Office and has been squeezing the balls of British and American politicians for years (especially those with perceived “Left” leanings) and he then uses News Corp.'s newspaper rags and TV news outlets to carry out his “hacking-based” Far Right attacks.

Here's an idea, go look at Wikipedia.org and any other LEGITIMATE news source (certainly NOT Faux News, The New York Pest or Wall $treet Journal) to check out the HUNDRED$ of MILLION$ of $ettlement Payoff$ to buy the silence of HACKING VICTIMS and competitors in the American “couponing” business (where News America hacked into mainframe computer systems) and NDS “forged” DECRYPTED DishTV satellite cards (which went to the courts). This pattern of CRIMINALITY alone points to the FASCIST nature of how one industrialist/monopolist (Citizen Murdoch) carries out this kind of muck-raking agenda and control of the media (at least from a Fux News global perspective!).

You know, FilmSquirt, I don't think you could tell the difference from Communism or Fascism if Josef Stalin, Chairman Mao and Adolf Hitler were each BITCH-SLAPPING you in the face! You really need to learn a bit about history and make sense of your ILLOGICAL arguments/theses, IMHO. Education/knowledge is power and you really need to work on that, in due respect. ;-D

    • America47000

You're confusing people by describing MSNBC and yet have labeled it Fox News, which goes out of its way to present multiple sides of an issue. I find what most leftists don't like is for the issue to be raised at all. That's where the bias charge comes in.

Hang out with your straw men all you want, but you aren't fooling anyone with an actual brain.

    • FilmPunk

Does it bother you that the NY Times or any other mainstream news organization refuse to challenge obama on Libya? They refuse to even cover the information coming out of the CIA and State department.

      • MyTooSenseLA

No. The NY Times generally does an excellent job of reporting. This Benghazi thing has become entirely politicized because of the election. If, in fact, you've read the NY Times reporting you'd know the CIA has reported: the intelligence from Libya and Benghazi was evolving. The administration reported what they knew at the time. In fact, the raid on the consulate was organized but is now, well-known to have been, YES, a REACTION to that stupid film. Nor has Mr. Romney in anyway made clear WHAT he might have done differently. It's all somewhat bewildering. As in ANY crisis a clear picture was, and still is, emerging. NO intelligence is ever perfect, esp. in a crisis/war zone. And the uproar from the “loyal opposition” is more than a little hypocritical: the Bush administration had months and months to assemble their foolproof, 100% guaranteed intel on WMD's in Iraq…?? Then, the following year, the American President, Mr. Bush, makes light of it at the White House correspondents dinner (go look it up, the video–haha–of President Bush looking for WMD's in the White House, a real knee slapper that). Oops.

What's your point? What's Mitt's point? With Mitt in the White House his intelligence would be every bit as foolproof and up-to-the-minute as Dubya's?? The point should be, how can we — somehow — stabilize the middle east and prevent anymore Benghazis. And Syrias. Sorry, but I don't think Mitt, the MBA, is the guy to do it. MBA's don't make very good presidents.

        • FilmPunk

There is so much in your comment I'm not sure I have time to get to all of it.

“YES, A REACTION to that stupid film.” No one is saying that this was a reaction to the YouTube clip. Who is reporting this? The CIA and the White House are now saying that it was coordinated attack and had nothing to do with the video. The administration got caught with their pants down on Libya and tried to get out of it by lying.

Sept 12- Hillary says the attack was related to a YouTube video.

Sept 13– Carney “The protests we're seeing around the region are in reaction to this movie. They are not directly in reaction to any policy of the United States or the government of the United States or the people of the United States.”

Sept 14– Carney “We were not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent.”

Sept 16– Susan Rice, “”We do not have information at present that leads us to conclude that this was premeditated or preplanned.” She also said it was because of the YouTube Video.

Sept 20– Obama “What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests.”

Sept 27– A senior U.S. official tells CNN that it became clear within about a day of the Benghazi attack that it been work of terrorists: Separately, CNN National Security Analyst Fran Townsend reports that a law enforcement source told her that “from day one we had known clearly that this was a terrorist attack.”

The administration knew within hours that this was an organized terrorist attack yet they still tried to spin this to make themselves look better.

The most recently released emails show that within 2 hours of the attack beginning the white house was told that a militant group was claiming responsibility for the attack. yet they went out with the story.

You assertion that no intelligence is perfect is true but weeks leading up to Sept 11 the state dept was told that they needed more security but it was refused. You can't defend this unless your blind, further bringing up bush will not change what Obama has done. The administration lied to the american people and you can't bring yourself to accept it.

Since you bothered to reply. Here are some sources, since you asked:

            http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/22/us/politics/explanation-for-benghazi-attack-under-scrutiny.html?pagewanted=all

This is a good link as well:

            http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/16/world/africa/election-year-stakes-overshadow-nuances-of-benghazi-investigation.html

            In which the Times reports:

“To those on the ground, the circumstances of the attack are hardly a mystery. Most of the attackers made no effort to hide their faces or identities, and during the assault some acknowledged to a Libyan journalist working for The New York Times that they belonged to the group. And their attack drew a crowd, some of whom cheered them on, some of whom just gawked, and some of whom later looted the compound.

The fighters said at the time that they were moved to act because of the video, which had first gained attention across the region after a protest in Egypt that day. The assailants approvingly recalled a 2006 assault by local Islamists that had destroyed an Italian diplomatic mission in Benghazi over a perceived insult to the prophet. In June the group staged a similar attack against the Tunisian Consulate over a different film, according to the Congressional testimony of the American security chief at the time, Eric A. Nordstrom.”

For a complete accurate timeline of the whole Benghazi incident, check this:

            http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/libya/index.html

Yeah, it's the leftist rag NY Times — granted, totally unreliable — but it's still good, solid, accurate reporting. The truth is, Benghazi, like so much of this troubled world, was a tragic and unnecessary loss of good, talented American lives. But, I'm sorry, Mitt Romney has attempted to somehow twist it into a cover-up…of what??? Unfortunately, nothing from the, um, ‘loyal opposition’ makes any sense.

The administration was making good faith efforts to understand what was happening, and report it to the American people. And, YES, as it turns out, it appears to have been an organized militia THAT USED THE DUMB FILM as a pretext to attack the consulate. Where is the scandal?

          • MyTooSenseLA

I left you a detail and substantiated reply. For whatever reason the Wrap appears not to want to post it. Hopefully it will.

The CIA absolutely ISN'T saying the attack had NOTHING to do with the video: it is saying it was an opportunistic and coordinated attack that used the demonstrations in Egypt, and throughout the Arab world, as a pretext to attack the consulate in Benghazi… But at the end of the day, really, what difference does it make?

Maybe the Wrap will post the links and maybe they won't. I really fail to see why this is an earth-shaking scandal? What would Mitt have done differently? It was an acknowledged tragedy and a waste of talented American lives. Is anyone really dumb enough to think that the Obama White House — a pretty shrewd group, if nothing else — would, I dunno, deliberately shade intelligence to perpetrate the myth that Al Qaeda is completely defeated? No one in their right minds believes that, not even us looney Dems. What Benghazi tells us is this remains a very dangerous and unstable world — and NOTHING Mitt said or did during the final debate convinced me he'd be a better commander-in-chief. His main contribution seemed to be to agree with the president at every turn. Thanks.

          • MyTooSenseLA

(Just wondering why the Wrap chose not to put up my last post??? Because it contained links to the NY Times?? Is that some kind of policy thing here — no links??? Seems a bit odd.)

Why can't you admit that Obama screwed this up and cost four american's their lives? It was his policies that created this mess. We should never had people over there but Obama wants to believe all is right because of his political narrative. They knew the truth and sent Susan Rice out to tell a lie that fit their agenda.

It's no big REVELATION that Roger Goebbels, er, Ailes, of the Far Right Fascist Fux News mosh pit has nose up the arse of Condoleeza Rice or ANYONE else of the former Bush Jr./Cheney Scorched Earth Regime!! After all, the [Un]Fair, [Un]Balanced & Unhinged Fux News Channel makes it no secret they are willing to bend-over backwards (literally) to sing the Far Right Fascist gospel in accordance with News Corp chief hacker Citizen Rupe Murdoch!

The fact that a Fux News spokesman told Gawker that GOP propagandist Roger Goebbels “speaks to powerful people from the left and the right all the time” is a LAUGHABLE dismissal of the LONG-STANDING allegations of Far Right bias at Fux News. Now, who in their “sane minds” from the “LEFT” would want to regularly consult with Roger Goebbels when they readily KNOW that Fux News Channel would only be a GRIST MILL to freely slander and libel (on FuxNews.com too!) any of these baddie “LEFTIES, COMMIES and DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS” they regularly TAR on a DAILY BASIS.

What a bizarre assumption that Roger Goebbels would provide any kind of FAIR and UNBIASED counsel to so-called “Lefty” — they're usually getting someone to pour faux gasoline cans over the heads of those “damn liberals” with their air time at Fux News! ;-D

BREAKING NEWS: The Wrap sees… nothing. This is Hollywood news, how? And so, some guy with money congratulates an appointee. SEVEN YEARS AGO. And it's BREAKING NEWS? About Hollywood? If you're going to cover Washington, where is your BREAKING NEWS about how the Obama Administration left our Ambassador unprotected before the assault and how they – in REAL TIME – ignored pleas for help, with our military only 20 minutes away. HELLO?

    • BenghaziVs1983BeirutBombings

Bill S., in case you hadn't noticed, TheWrap covers ALL forms of media, including the so-called Mainstream Media news-gathering organizations, including Faux News Channel. I'll have to agree the “news” is probably minimal that Roger Goebbels, er…Ailes, having his nose up the arse of ANY Far Right Repugnant Party official including Condoleeza Rice.

Hey, where's yours and other Far Righties’ self-righteous indignation when it came to the Reagan Administration allowing 241 American servicemen be SLAUGHTERED in their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon in October 1983 — and NEVER exacting a widespread investigation and MANHUNT to get JUSTICE for the Palestinian terrorists (not a single one!) who carried out that large-scale TRUCK BOMBING?? It's so funny when you Far Righter, so-called “Neo-Con Hawks” think you have a corner on National Security and Homeland Defense issues when it was the Obama Administration that finally hunted down and assassinated Osama Bin Laden!

It must kill you self-righteous Far Righties that Obama could be tougher and more targeted on getting the REAL TERRORISTS than the Bush Jr./Cheney “WMDs in Iraq” Fabrication BOZOS!!!

Just remember my Far Right wing-nuts that 241 of our American troops DIED in Beirut in October 1983 during your beloved Dutch Reagan Administration, which did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to seek out justice and avenge their deaths against the TRUCK-BOMBING TERRORISTS involved in that heinous attack!

While I feel terrible about what happened to the ambassador and three other staffers who were killed in Benghazi, believe me, Obama, the CIA and U.S. military branches will be much more TARGETED and FOCUSED in seeking JUSTICE like they did with Seal Team Six in Pakistan in finally getting Osama bin Laden. It's just really gets my gander going when you Far Right, so-called “Neo-Cons” say you want to indiscriminately blast EVERYBODY in sight, yet entirely DISMISS THE FAILURES of the Reagan and Bush Jr. administrations in being at all FOCUSED in getting true justice??!!!

His reckless spending and fiscal policies have added more to the national dept than most U.S. Presidents combined….roughly $6 trillion in his first term in office (making the total debt nearly $16 trillion…and by White House projections alone, $21.3 trillion by the end of fiscal 2017. His administration's out of control spending has led America to the economic brink and destroyed our country's credit rating. Now he has lied and 4 Americans have died…and still no explanation from him…just hide behind Hillary's skirt. Did his photo op in N.J. and off to Vegas baby. Got to shore up the votes there. What a loser. Get use to saying President Romney. He will be with us for eight years.

Question for you- do you have proof that any conservative (I'll even say republican) has ever tried to limit the freedom of the press? It was America that championed freedom of speech so tell me what groups have been against it? I'll help you out, Socialist and communist yet you seem to compare the conservatives with Hitler. Hitler was a socialist- like our president and his supporters. So why do you think keep making that comparison? The only person who has attempted to limit free speech is Obama.

BenghaziVs1983BeirutBombings is right. We cover all forms of media. And this is news because the note just came out of a FOIA request. Therefore, the news is that this information is now available for us all to discuss. Thanks for reading!

Right on, Mr. Kaufman! No matter what, whether it's former Reagan operative Ailes in the hip pocket of Republican functionaries (while editorial chief of Faux News Channel) or some editorial employee at MSNBC or CNN allegedly offering up assistance to Obama Administration and/or DNC officials, it is all FAIR fodder for REPORTING in ANY media outlet (even Faux News Channel).

Media watchdog groups (like Media Matters, etc.) do it too if there is an electronic or paper trail through FOIA or other alternative “sources” — and it all has to be vetted and verified too! As long as there are media organizations (including TheWrap, etc.) and watchdog groups to call out these apparent “conflicts of interest” — be it from the Right to Left ends of the political spectrum — the more POWER to you guys for reporting it.

That is entirely the point of FREEDOM OF THE PRESS to serve as filters, ombudsman and reporters for the truth in identifying potential “conflicts of interest” when it comes to ANY other media organization's coverage. In a FREE COUNTRY, the similar FREEDOMS OF THE PRESS are what we have cherished and have FOUGHT FOR throughout our country's history. God bless a FREE PRESS and keep up the great, necessary works! :-D

The talking heads guarding the inhabitants of Bullsh*t Mountain from rejoining the world of the sane just won't budge an inch will they? Fox News is a propaganda machine which dumbs down America by the day through disinformation and their slanted agendas. See their anchors spewing forth feces from their mouths in my visual homage to the network on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-fox-news-scylla-guardian-of-bullsht.html

FOX NEWS IS OUT TO DESTROY AMERICA – They are owned by Rupert Murdoch an Aussie married to a Chinese Communist Wendy Deng, who's biggest shareholder is Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia. They are dividing this country with their anti-government hate filled crap while Deng builds her media empire in China with Fox dollars.

Frank….your tinfoil hat is too tight. Give it a rest.

      • BenghaziVs1983BeirutBombings

I'm not sure if I totally buy into Frank's Wendy Deng ”commie” connections, but I do have to say I've found his posts simultaneously enlightening, insightful and humorous all at the same time. Pass me the tinfoil hat, Frank, because this reminds me of the daily, wild bat-shite-crazy antics that take place at Faux News Channel EACH and EVERYDAY! Waaaaaa! ;-D

Doesn't take much to keep your entertained, does it Benghazi Butt Wipe? You must be getting paid by the word for all the trolling you are doing….who's minding your bridge for you?

Destroy America? Barack Obama has already almost done it. You should feel proud for helping him.

    • FilmPunk

give me some facts on that. How are they doing it?

Having studied the early part of Mr. Ailes career as a consultant I know that what he did was show people how to present themselves on TV. It is all outlined in his book, “You Are the Message.” In other words, a lot of what he did was personal coaching. I'll bet he is still as good as anyone at it. Let's face it, Condi Rice could use some help in that regard. This is in no way a comment on the political leanings of Fox News Channel or of Mr. Ailes, both of which are in need of no further analysis.

    • BenghaziVs1983BeirutBombings

Hey, I wonder if Roger Goebbels, er, Ailes, was the one who “coached” Glenn Beckenstein on how to swing bats and pour faux gasoline on his staged, poor schnook on-air guests?

I'm thinking whatever ethics, self-esteem and intellectualism Mr. Ailes once possessed evaporated sometime during Reagan's second term (right before he was hired by Citizen Rupe, I'm assuming).

So, you people are worried about this, are ya?
