Gawker has obtained an audio tape, allegedly of West justifying his actions the evening of the 2009 VMAs
Ever wanted to be at a 2009 MTV VMA afterparty with Kanye West to hear why he so brazenly interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech? Well now you can be. Allegedly.
Gawker obtained audiotape that sounds an awful lot like Mr. West and friends ranting after the awards show, searching for justification in West's now-infamous microphone-stealing act. Apparently, the reason West bumrushed the country singer is because he spent two days re-writing his verse on "Run This Town." Or something like that.
TheWrap reached out to West's reps for comment on the audio, but did not immediately hear back.
Here is Gawker's transcription of the event. Click over to them for the audio.
"I'd rather just let the [inaudible] speak for itself. You know, it's like, I was happy to be in a situation where people couldn't say, oh, I was trying to promote my own song. For the times that I've, like, defended myself… [Tape break] I'm pushing the envelope! I wrote my f—in' 'Run This Town' verse for a f—in' month! When I heard Eminem's verse on the Drake shit, I went back and rewrote my shit for two days. I canceled appointments to rewrite! I f—in' care! You know what I'm saying? And that's what I'm saying. Because I did that, Taylor Swift cannot win over Beyoncé! Because I wrote my verse in two days, Taylor Swift cannot beat Beyoncé. As long as I'm alive! And if I'm alive, kill me then! Kill me then! As long as I'm alive, you gon' have to deal with it. 'Cause there ain't gonna be no more motherf—ing Elvises with no James Browns."
He continued, "It ain't no love. What the f— was Pink performing? Don't nobody know that song. Pink performed twice! Two songs? How the f— Pink perform two songs and I didn't even get asked to perform "Heartless." "Heartless" is the biggest song of the year! It had the most spins of the first quarter! I don't know that Pink song! But I know that she's pink! They put me in a f—in' room and [inaudible – maybe 'projected it']."
The media site, which tags that "Today's gossip is tomorrow's news," says that the audio was secretly recorded at the Corner Bistro in New York. The meal — and venting — came after West publicly threw his support behind friend Beyonce. Unfortunately, the award was being accepted at the time by a stunned Swift. West made the apology rounds over the following couple of days.
