Roku has added TV shows, movies and other entertainment content from new partners like Time Warner Cable and Blockbuster on Demand to its in-home entertainment devices.
Roku, which launched in 2008 as the first device to stream Netflix to a TV, now boasts more than 700 channels for its devices, ranging from Netflix and Hulu to PBS and SyFy.
Its new deals span video, music and gaming, including movie rentals from Blockbuster, ongoing Fox shows like “New Girl” and “Glee” through FOX NOW and music videos from Vevo. Roku has also made a separate deal to bring Time Warner Cable TV to Roku devices, the first time Time Warner Cable has made its app available for a connected TV device.
That enables Roku customers to watch live TV from more than 300 channels using the service, provided they are Time Warner Cable subscribers.
“The availability of a service like TWC TV on an open platform represents significant milestones for both Time Warner Cable and Roku as well as for the industry overall,” Anthony Wood, founder and CEO of Roku, said in a statement. “More importantly, with TWC TV, customers will have more choice in entertainment than was ever possible before."
Roku announced its new partners, which also include Spotify and iHeartRadio, at the outset of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Roku also announced that its streaming technology will come baked into a new series of Smart TVs and others devices from six partners including Coby Electronics and Westinghouse Digital.
