Condé Nast announced on Monday that it is moving Bon Appétit, its 35-year-old Los Angeles-based food magazine, to New York. Longtime editor Barbara Fairchild, who has been with the title for 32 years, is not.
The company said Fairchild is staying in California to pursue other opportunities, including “future projects for Condé Nast.” She’s served as Bon Appétit’s editor-in-chief since 2000. (Fairchild will edit the next few issues during the transition, the company said.)
“I just couldn’t wrap my head around the whole concept of me moving to New York,” Fairchild told the Los Angeles Times.
Bon Appétit was founded in 1975, and has always called L.A. its home.
Condé Nast recently signed an agreement to move from its 4 Times Square headquarters in Midtown Manhattan to Ground Zero’s so-called Freedom Tower in 2014.
Condé CEO Chuck Townsend said moving Bon Appétit’s to New York "is part of the company’s continuing efforts to strategically align our brands for future growth and to enhance efficiencies and coordination by consolidating our assets."
Bon Appétit’s ad pages increased about 3 percent during the first half, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. The magazine has a circulation of about 1.5 million.
