Despite ABC News’ attempt to downplay Diane Sawyer’s debut as “World News” host, more people tuned in.

According to Showtracker, Sawyer’s first newscast drew an average of 8.934 million between 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. – beating the season-to-date average of 8 million viewers and its Monday average of 8.41 million viewers.

Still, ABC was number two behind NBC (9.305 million) and ahead of CBS (5.946 million).

Final Nielsen numbers won't be available until next week.
