Google chairman Eric Schmidt has agreed to testify before the Senate Judiciary subcommittee investigating his company’s business practices -- specifically matters of competition.

The subcommittee, which is specifically looking at Google's approach to competition, had been threatening to subpoena either Schmidt or CEO Larry Page.

That would appear to be unnecessary now that Schmidt has assented to appear, though no date has been set for his testimony.

Google is facing a similar investigation in Europe, where the European Commission is looking into complaints that the search giant is actively trying to hinder its competition.
