When Gizmodo posted photos of the next-generation iPhone it bought for $5,000 from someone who allegedly "found it" in a Silicon Alley bar, legal questions immediately arose: Would Gizmodo parent Gawker Media or its "source" face charges?
The general consensus from analysts and pundits (Jeff Bercovici aside) seemed to be, well, "probably not."
But according to CNET, police in Silicon Valley are now investigating the transaction to see if any laws were broken.
Gawker chief Nick Denton did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did Apple. A representative for the police department in San Mateo County was not available for comment.
It's unclear what, exactly, the police are investigating. CNET hasn't been able to confirm whether the probe is targeting Gawker, its source or both.
Shortly after the story broke on Monday, Gizmodo posted a letter sent by Apple asking for the device back, and Gizmodo complied.
